Religion has always been of fundamental importance in Roman history - the ancient Romans actually ascribed their military success to favour from the gods in return for their religious piety.
The transition from the glory days of the ancient pagan religion to the modern-day Catholic church has been a fascinating and often turbulent one, and this tour takes you through the early years. From the persecution of Christians, through the development of the Christian catacombs, the eventual legalisation of Christianity, and the building of some of the first basilica churches, we bring to life the whole story.
We take a visit to the Catacombs - the fascinating underground sites of early Christian burial, and see 2000 year old frescoes and engravings. Returning to the city we visit some of the oldest and most charming of Rome's many churches.
