| This picturesque area has a tradition of art and culture dating back to the Etruscans. Trastevere (literally 'across the Tiber') was only conquered by the Romans is 396BC, and was never properly assimilated into the city - as late as the 19th century a real 'Trasteverino' would boast that they had never crossed the river! It was traditionally the residential area of Rome's artisans, and has retained its bohemian feel even to this day. With cobbled, narrow streets, Trastevere provides a perfect and unique setting for an insight to the Rome of a bygone age, and the many restaurants, bars and street stalls make it a perfect setting for a romantic night out. For anyone worried about getting lost in those charming cobbled streets, our 'Off the Beaten Track' tour covers all Trastevere's most historic sights. On a more modern note, Trastevere is also home to Rome's largest street market - Porta Portese - which is held every Sunday morning. Attractions: Villa Farnesina Built in the 16th century for the incredibly rich banker Agostino Chigi, as a residence for his mistress and illegitimate children, this lovely villa was once thesetting for artistic and political debates between the cognoscenti of 16th century Rome. It most interesting for the artworks it contains. Among works by artists such as Peruzzi and Sodoma the villa's highlights are the works by Raphael, including his world-famous Galatea. Santa Cecilia in Trastevere Built on the site where the home of Saint Cecilia once stood, this basilica is one of the earliest in all of Rome. Recommendations: Cafe/PIzzeria: Frontoni corner of Viale Trastevere and Via Francesco a Ripa Restaurants: Hostaria del Moro Vicolo dei Cinque, 36-37 + 39 06 580 9165 This fabulous restaurant is made even more welcoming by the lovely proprietor, Tony. The food is also extremely good, with exceptional bruschette, antipasti and grilled seafood platters. Suffice to say, the optimus team eat here regularly! Bars: Molly Malone Via dell'Arco di San Calisto, 17 +39 06 583 309 04 This small bar is a hidden gem in the heart of Trastevere. Playing great music (lots of jazz) and with a happy hour 6-9pm where pints are only E2.60 it is one of the best kept secrets of the area. It is a cultural association, so be prepared to ring the bell and pay a membership fee of E2 to get in. |
