| In the days of ancient Rome, this area was outside the city centre, and was reserved for military practice, called the Campus Martius (Field of Mars). It still preserves many sights from those times, such as the breathtaking Pantheon, but today is most famed for the embellishments it received at the hands of the popes, such as Piazza Navona. Attractions: Santa Maria sopra Minerva Piazza Minerva The only mediaeval gothic church in Rome, this church houses works by some of Italy's most interesting and important artists, as well as the tombs of four popes. It nestles behind the Pantheon, and in front of it stands Bernini's charming statue of an elephant bearing an obelisk on its back. Crypta Balbi Via Botteghe Oscure Recommendations: Restaurants Primi delle Classe Via Tel: 06 This restaurant offers great Italian pasta dishes, including an option where you have a small portion of six different dishes. Bars Campo di Fiori As well as a daily produce market, this square has many bars which cater for a predominantly young crowd. Look out for Sloppy Sams, The Drunken Ship and Heartbreak. Ice Cream Blue Ice There are a number of Blue Ice shops around, and all serve good quality ice cream at reasonable prices. The selection and size of portions is good, and the presentation is delicious! |
