PUBLIC CONSUMPTION

I've never seen so much pollen in my life. One can watch a rare gust blow a yellow-green cloud out of a tree. I don't seem to be allergic -- the weatherman says pollen counts are extremly high, but it hasn't bothered me a bit.

Still haven't gotten out much to see the city. Haven't seen any live jazz yet. What kind of fan am I?

I'm typing this at Morehouse School of Medicine. The library has really fast PCs I can use to job hunt on. L commuted as usual, but I came later in the day, riding my bike 15 minutes to the Lindbergh MARTA stop, rode the train south to the West End station, then biked another minute or two to MSM. The whole trip to about 50 minutes. Had lunch w/ L and some of her colleagues, and here I am.

Before the move I gave all my bikes away except for one, my brother's old Bianchi. It's a nice, fast bike. I carry stuff around in some great saddle bags my mom got me a while back. They're very useful.

We close on the Ballwin (MO) house on April 10. We've had a few headaches; we weren't able to sell the washer or dryer we left in Ballwin, and figuring out what to do with them has been a real pain. We've hired MiniMoves a company that specializes in small moves to bring them down to Atlanta -- we're crossing our fingers.

I can handle the pollen and the move. Thank God I'm not someone who can't proceed in life without knowing for certain whether they are hated by cats. But if you are one of these people, allow me to bring some resolution into your life: Click here.)

Fallen pine needles make a fine running surface -- soft like grass, flat like pavement.

L tends to prefer her native cuisine, but there are a few Yankee dishes she likes. After I had started making them for breakfast, she took to peanut butter & jelly on wheat toast. In the days after the move, we didn't have a coffee maker, so L went to Kroger (When was the last time I saw a Kroger? Wooster?), where she bought a jar containing brown crystals with the word "coffee" on it. Turns out it was coffee-flavored Postum. In fairness, I should point out that I would do much worse in a Chinese supermarket.

I like Postum. Jerry Seinfeld (or his character, rather) once called it an "underrated drink."

So one morning L, in Mongolian tradition, nukes a bowl of 2% milk and puts a spoonful of coffee-flavored Postum in it. I tried it. Not bad. Lately we've been using skim.

When we got to our new hometown, L rounded up a few friends and some of their friends to help us unload the U-Haul. Anybody who's moved knows that a few extra hands make a HUGE difference. One of these helpers was a guy named Jonathan. Last night while L and I were walking to the tennis courts (we didn't play -- the line was too long) we saw Jonathan using a film (!) camera to take pictures of the cherry trees. He prints the photos (or has them printed), scans them, then posts them on the web.

If you're sick of telemarketers, the FTC has a website for its upcoming national do-not-call list. (Press release.) For what it's worth, my old home state's version worked very well.
