| In the history of the San Francisco Opera, Joan of Arc has been performed before.
However it was the one-act oratorio by Honegger performed in 1954. This is sometimes performed in concert version and sometimes as an opera. There was an need on the concert platform for the Joan of Arch to act out her role, and conversely, there is a need in staging for Joan to have a certain amount of stylization. Set designer, Harry Horner handled the chorus Greek-fashion and heightened moods of the drama with projection onto the stage. A ballet also had a prominent part in the action. Dorothy McGuire of the movies, replacing Greer Garson, was a touching Joan and Lee Marvin was Friar Dominic. Bloomfield's 50 Years of SFO |
