La Forza del Destino
Giuseppe Verdi
Forza is known in Italy as the unlucky opera. Verdi experienced in person its "evil eye" when the prima donna fell ill and the whole Russian production was postponed for ten months. For Verdi and Strepponi this meant two winter journeys to Russia. On their first return trip, they nearly froze in an unheated railway carriage on the 200 kms stretch through Lithuania. The problem with Forza is not its epic looseness so much as its leaning on vast tableaux of Preziosilla, choruses and dances which often hover on the edge of Second Empire frippery. Yet, Forza's best tableaux had an impact on the Russian opera, particularly Musorgskij's Boris Godunov. The opera has its great moments, including three of the most memorable tunes Verdi wrote.
