Seattle Opera's "Die Fledermaus" had more than its share of surprises in nearly three hours of nonstop laughs and fine singing, but the moment that took everyone's breath away was that "Liebestod" � sung by soprano Jane Eaglen in honor of the legendary singer Birgit Nilsson, whose death was announced this past week./ January 16, 2006-Seattle

The production by Lotfi Mansouri was originally performed in San Francisco and that company's general manager emeritus obviously knows how to do comedy. The beautiful and intricately realistic set was designed by Wolfram Skalicki and the exquisitely detailed costumes were by Thierry Bosquet./ Japonica
