Winter Came Today

The winter came today with torrents of rain,

Our summer of passions and laughter washing away.

We shed the proof like reptiles, with disdain,

In bodies bronzed, of sultry nights and days.

The winter came today with wind to dry

Our dewy faces, stealing moistness sere

From careless lips, and kisses sacrificed,

And loving gazes condense----then disappear.

The winter came today with icy chills

That numb our fingertips and glaze our sight

To steel gray stares, and frostbit tongues distill----

We rushed away to insulate our nights.
