Masquerade
The
search for intricate, elaborate ways
and special repartee
to open the doors of romance,
and a chance
to be noticed by "The One,"
and fast before some
other rival catches their eye,
is the pastime
that consumes the time of singles.
To
commingle
with the opposite sex
at discotheques
or other dark and quiet places,
they use devices
that have always proved reliable
and they hope will
yet produce enchanting magic
that they seek.
The
women carefully prepare
and curl their hair,
wearing makeup and alluring costumes before
gliding out the door.
The
men entice for introduction,
and sly seduction,
no less dressed like peacocks
and jocks,
for that moment they can seduce
some maiden who
is younger, and quite a showpiece,
but still naive.
As
time reveals that women get older,
the men get bolder
to see the playing field for them
is forever broadened.
And
soon they learn that aging is a friend,
for it is when
success makes up for egomaniacs
and Neanderthal throwbacks.
But
time does not see justice done---
romance won't come
to women's tired and withered faces.
When
final traces
of youth desert the weaker sex,
their dwindling prospects
turn away to chase the young and cruelly prophesy
that love will pass them by.
