The Darkness

O, mystic blackness of night,

Wrap about me your endless darkness

While in your blanket of silence I lay,

And lift me to your infinite heights.

Let me soar to your furthest reaches

And for one brief moment

Let not the light descend upon me

And sever the calm that holds me speechless.

For it is the foreboding darkness

From whence I was born,

And by Eternity nurtured

And fed from knowledge at her breast.

Why eludes me your mystery here?

For in the darkness everything is,

But a prisoner of mortality is my soul

And my muddled eyes see only fear.

Hear my pleading cry, one pitiful request---

To still my suffering while I live,

That you will gently wrap me

In the shroud of knowledge upon my death.
