The Cookie Parable
(Used in a discussion about why Moses had to speak on God's behalf to Israel.)
Let us say that you want a cookie. the cookies are very high, and you can't reach them, but your mom, who is very tall, gets one and gives it to you. later, you grow up, and you notice that you can reach the cookie yourself (by now it is stale, but we will assume that a new package has been bought). This is a true statement, fully conforming to the realities of the physical world which include the facts that kids are short, and cookies are high. But what does this all mean? One interpretation is that children are not yet responsible to take care of themselves, they don't have the knowledge, nor the self control. If the cookies were at a lower level, you would eat them all and get sick. This is why we need somebody smarter, more experienced, and who cares about you, to give only one cookie at a time, because that is all that your tiny stomach can handle. Hashem, in His infinite mercy, made kids small and dependent, so they would not be able to get themselves in too much trouble, for they would not have the physical size and strength of an adult before knowing how to use it responsibly. |
