I Do

“Pacey,” she called

He turned and waited.

“I’m gonna promise to love him tomorrow.”

“I know.”

“And care for him and protect what we have, no matter what.”

He nodded.

“And I wanted to thank you. For that.”

“I don’t know what you mean.”

“Yes, you do.”

He smiled.

“Thank you for loving me, like that. It means so much to me.”

“You’re welcome.” Pacey started to turn and walk away. Then he turned round again.

“Jo?”

“Yeah?”

“Did we meet too early? Fall in love too late?”

She smiled wistfully, then a certain peace fell upon her, lighting her eyes aglow. “I like to think it was all just in time.”

He nodded again, grinning. “He’s a lucky man.”

“Maybe.” She leaned up on her toes, her hands falling gently on his shoulders. Joey pressed a feather soft kiss on his cheek. Pacey held her a little closer, his head nuzzling her neck. She finally pulled away, her eyes watery. “But I’m much luckier. Goodbye, Pace.”

She had been gone an hour before he allowed the first tear to roll down his cheek. Two hours before he said it, soft and hoarse in his throat. “Goodbye, Jo.”
