Part 2
The new girl in school was a brunette. And she was turning heads already. Striding through the school in a manner that had the halls of Capeside High parting for her all Red Sea style, she left time for only two qualities to be noticed. One was the dark brown hair that cascaded down to the small of her back in curls, held out of her face with a metal clip. The other quality had to do with her eyes.
They were dark brown, laced with long black eyelashes, and they held nothing. They were sparkled only as much as a muddy hill during a rainstorm and contained the depth of a childs drawing. A simple Crayola sketch of what eyes looked like, round with pupils, containing both colored parts and white parts. They were absolutely passive. In fact, it was her unwavering calm and not her beauty which caused the others to stare. In a school with a rich tradition of angst, the emotionless young woman was a dangerous outsider from her first clipped step against the linoleum floor.
Pacey and Joey were quietly talking as their home room class began. Switching over to hastily scrawled notes as their teacher turned his eyes their way, they missed the arrival of the long haired stranger.
She arrived late, like the new kids in school always do in movies, handing a note to their teacher, shy and already downtrodden. Except for the downtrodden part. Or the shy part. A friendly smile that refused to reach those eyes plastered across her face, she spoke to the teacher quickly, shoulders squared, confidant in her stance. When the teacher nodded slightly towards the row of desks, she turned and paused for a moment. She looked over the other students, who straightened under her appraising gaze.
All except Pacey and Joey, who were in the midst of touching each other covertly. Paceys hands were lighting fingering the strands of Joeys hair, who was sitting in front of him and stretching her arms slightly to accidentally brush Paceys arms. The girl stared for a split second, her eyes flashing like lightning seen from a darkened window, and then walked purposefully to the empty desk next to Paceys. Sitting, she folded her hands together and stared down at them for a minute before shutting her eyes as the teacher introduced her to the rest of the class as Kaylen H. Roberts.
She spent the rest of the class taking diligent notes and avoiding the curious stares of her classmates. She was good at that. Too good. She stared at Pacey and the gossip mill started grinding. And she smiled at Joey, who was too distracted by her boyfriend to even notice. Dawson Leery watched her along with the rest of the class. He was sitting in a the back corner of the room, the perfect vantage point to observe his ex-soulmate, ex-best friend, and the new girl with the beautiful brown eyes. The empty brown eyes, Dawson amended. What a movie this would make. What would this do to the perfect couple? Dawson chuckled a little and tucked a stray lock of stringy blonde hair behind his ear. Should be an interesting semester.
