The topic that I chose to talk about is insanity or also called abnormal psychology. Hamlet has some definite problems in this region, his life being an absolute drag. Everything has gone wrong- his father was killed by his uncle, his uncle then married his mother, he has been pushed out of his shot at King and is trapped there to watch it all. On top of it all, the one he loved broke up with him and has maybe one person he can trust, Horatio.
I think Hamlet is affected with a depressive disorder. Features include: weight change, sleep disturbance, slowed movements and speech, restlessness, decreased feelings of energy, feelings of worthlessness, difficulty in thinking or concentrating, indecisiveness, excessive or inappropriate guilt, thoughts of death and suicide or suicide attempts. A person suffering from major depressive disorder is in a depressed mood for most of the day, nearly everyday or has lost interest or pleasure in all, for a period of at least two weeks. Its also not necessary for the person to report feeling depressed to be diagnosed. The presence of depressed mood can be implied from the persons behavior. Hamlet explains in Act 2, Scene 2, that life is meaningless to him, the air is a foul and pestilent congregations of vapours. And how beautiful and great the creature of man, but it gives him no pleasure. Also the woman doesnt give much pleasure either. He suffers from recurrent depression which is an extended pattern of depressed episodes. Treatments include two major forms, biogenic and psychotheraputic- the best approaches is a combination of both. The biogenic are drugs and psychotheraputic concentrates on defense mechanisms or internal conflicts. It looks towards the patients past rather than whats going on today.
