| Edward was born on August 19, 1925 in Lebanon, Indiana. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on November 22, 1943. He was a Rifleman Flamer Thrower 745 and attended Infantry Bn CE. He was in Company "C" 1st Bn, 1st Marines in 1944. He was in the field and travelled via "Rochambeau" May 13, 1944. He was also in the field via "Wakefield" on February 1, 1945. Edward was honorably discharged on February 13, 1946 at the rank of Corporal. Edward received these medals: (Click on name of medal for picture) Purple Heart - Instituted 1932, and is awarded to any member of the U.S. Armed Forces killed or wounded in an armed conflict. Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal - Instituted November 1, 1943 as Navy Commendation Medal. Awarded to service members who, while serving in any capacity with the Navy or Marine Corps, distinguish themselves by heroism, outstanding achievement or meritorious service. China Service Medal - Awarded to officers and men of the Navy and Marine Corps who participated in operations ashore in China, or were attached to certain ships in support of these operations between July 7, 1937 and September 7, 1939. This decoration was authorized in August 1940. World War 2 Victory Medal - This medal was established by an Act of Congress on July 6, 1945. This medal was awarded to all military personnel for service between December 7, 1941 and December 31, 1946. Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal - Awarded to personnel for service within the Asiatic-PacificTheater between December 7, 1941 and March 2, 1946. Navy Occupation Service Medal - This was created in 1947 and awarded to the Navy, USMC and USCG for 30 consecutive days' service in occupied territories of former enemies in the period 1945-1955. The bars "Europe" and "Asia" are approved to wear. Presidential Unit Citation - The Navy Presidential Unit Citation was established by Executive Order 9050 signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on February 6, 1942. The Navy Presidential Unit Citation has been in effect since October 16, 1941. This is awarded in the name of the President to units of the Armed Forces of the United States and cobelligerent nations for extraordinary heroism in action against armed enemy. The unit must have accomplished its mission under such extremely difficult and hazardous conditions to set it apart from and above other units participating in the same campaign. The degree of heroism required is the same as that which would be required for award of a Navy Cross to an individual. |
