One of the many things I've taken away from watching
The X-Files, and Scully, in particular, is having the courage
to stay and fight when everything else is telling me to run.
My job doesn't have physical danger, as Scully's does, but
it has a great deal of psychological pressure. I'm a Technical
Director on the evening news at our station. I'm the only
woman doing this job there, and one of only three people doing
this job in the station. There are a whole lot of things happening
during newscasts that have to happen quickly and precisely.
Amidst this, you have to deal with at least one Director who
doesn't want women working on his newscasts, and is verbally
abusive while you're trying to do your job quickly and precisely.

There are any number of times that I've wanted to either quit,
or do, or say, something unprofessional back at this Director.
But, foolish as it may sound, I let myself think about Scully, and
how she'd handle the situation, and gather myself up and continue
on. Scully is a wonderful character. She's got her flaws, but she is
the bravest character on television. Not just physically brave, but
mentally and psychologically courageous.
