| Ably supported by Paul Nilons Septimius. (Review Theodora-Handel) |
| In Zemlinsky's The Dwarf, the problem of presenting convincingly a short, repellently ugly tenor was effectively inverted in David Pountney's solution, rather as in a play (was it Brecht's?) in which all normal people had pointed heads and round heads were ridiculed.
Pountney had his Infanta and her playmates as ungainly grotesques, and the 'toy' dwarf looking (to us) elegant and 'normal' in standard dress-suit, Paul Nilon singing beautifully and emoting despair when he finally sees his 'ugly' self; I went along with this easily, c.p. (Review) |
| Paul Nilon stresses the undecided, reserved in the figure, sings with clean intonation, indeed, of a little developed depth and a little bit neutral height. Be tried to the rests by indecision and scruple in the character of the new Knigs councellor Garibaldo, even on the power keen, to meet with the demand for hardness. - Translated from German review of Rodelinda/ Bavarian Production |

| SFO 2005 Review Out-Takes: Tenor Paul Nilon as Grimoaldo was a complex character, a tyrant who couldn't bring himself to be a monster...Nilon was capable equally of blustering and of falling apart../ SF Classical Voice Grimoaldo (lyric tenor Paul Nilon) who has usurped Bertarido's throne, wants to solidify his position by marrying his "widow,'' but Nilon's voice shows him torn between an urge for power and a hidden yearning to be "Mr. Nice Guy.''./ Daily Republic The other unexpected star of the evening was tenor Paul Nilon as Grimoaldo, the usurper with a conscience. Clearly the audience favorite, Nilon delivered one spectacular aria like a Rat Pack cabaret number, and another while hanging suicidally in midair from a window./ SF Examiner |
