Peter Mattei baritone
In SFO 2005-2006 Season
Count Almaviva* Le Nozze Di Figaro
Biography
Swedish bass-baritone Peter Mattei brought his extraordinarily commanding tone and interpretive clarity to "Herr, lehre doch mich." (Review-Brahms "German Requiem")
Mozart - Don Giovanni
The real light of the opera emanates from Peter Mattei a Baritone whose Marcello is as honest and forthright with Rodolfo, as he is confused and violent with his own lover Musetta, played by Ainhoa Arteta. The nature of his roving mind, the artist's curse, is the strength of the play his firm gliding legato compounded by the sheer force of his height, a gangly six feet five inches. He exudes stage presence, where the others seem to be running to catch up to his shadow. (Review-La Boheme)

Peter Mattei's Count Almaviva was a surprisingly genial figure: a randy nuisance, yes, but lacking the predatory edge of a Don Giovanni or a Valmont. Even in scenes where we might expect him to press his advantage with Susanna, as in the Act I trio and especially the duet Crudel, perche fin'ora, he treated her with respect. His kisses seemed exuberant rather than lecherous, and he always allowed her to wriggle out of his grasp. He was by far the tallest person in the cast, but his demeanor was gangly rather than imposing, and the production seemed to downplay his aristocratic authority (the Act III trial scene, for example, was set outdoors on a terrace rather than in the Count's study or a courtroom). The high point of his performance, his Act III aria Vedr mentre io sospir, was an exhilarating flight of spite and petulance./ 06 SFCV
