Wal-Mart superCenter's Grand Opening in Dinuba near Reedley which Rejected Giant's Proposals

Wal-Mart knows a few things that Reedley officials do not know. If you build it, they will come. We should say that if you build it close enough, you can siphon the life out of the little town. Located just a few stone throws from the borders of Reedley, Wal-Mart opened a huge Supercenter capable of serving all the surrounding communities. Shoppers can buy rotisserie chicken, baby carrots and many other merchandises. The opening of Wal-Mart Supercenter brought back memories of SuperK which has seen most of its Valley stores closed. With an addition of 40,000 square feet of grocery aisles, Wal-Mart is on top of the game. Many people are saying that the money that Reedley businesses used to make will just go over to Dinuba which has already attracted the attention of some major box store operators. Best Buy has a warehouse right in the heart of this town known for its farms, orchards, gorgeous peaches, nectarines and pears. Wal-Mart Supercenter also offers a deli counter, bakery, dairy case and fresh flowers. In other words, it creates an atmosphere where families want to shop. More than anything, the store has to remain attractive to the constituents of the town and the various ethnic groups. That is why it offers dried chiles, Tampico juice drinks, ice cream, frozen vegetables and other foods in English and Spanish. Even the store's monthly circulars are planned to be released in the two languages. Hispanic consumers like Wal-Mart for the conveniences it offers.

Wal-Mart already has planned to open many more stores in the San Joaquin Valley. For sure, Reedley may not soon be one of the contenders. Even if the officials changed their mind, it may be too late. Reedley young men and women who want to hang have been known to go to Dinuba where they can watch a movie and play some video games. Now, they can go to Wal-Mart SuperCenter to shop and pass the time. Wal-Mart is looking forward to opening other stores in Selma and Sanger. Negotiations are under way. Many business people are already talking about the company's plan to wipe them out. They just can not compete with Wal-Mart's low prices.

The Central California Valley is a cultural oasis with major galleries, museums, an orchestra, opera and ballet company. Kaiser, John Muir and the Minarets wilderness areas offer the ultimate in popular backcountry experiences and the world-renown Sequoia, Kings Canyon and Yosemite National Parks provide unrivaled visual splendor. Fresno is also surrounded by water with lakes as close as 15 minutes away and white-water rafting available on one of its large rivers. The nationally acclaimed Blossom Trail takes visitors on a 62-mile tour throughout gorgeous blooming orchards and luscious foothill fluorescence in the most beautiful springtime weather anywhere.
