Giving and Recieving
The concept of giveing and recieving isn't a new theory. And if your christian, this relates to the bible when it mentioned, "Do unto others as you'd have them do unto you." This is also an ettiquette amoungst the fae which you should employ in your every day life to show the fae your honorable.
Let's start off with the easy version of it (as there are two versions, both of which you should practice). If anyone ever gives you something, accept it welcomingly. And either right then or after a while repay them with the same curtesy. If they help you out in some big or small way, repay the favor. And if your not sure how, keep a carefull ear open to what they could use or need done and do it for them. Even if your not sure how to do it, make the attempt. It was never better said than, It's the thought that counts.
That was the recieving part, this is the giving. My father has his own code of laws, one of which I highly agree with. Especially when it comes to the faery faith. Don't give hand outs, give hand ups. What this means is, if someone is out of his luck and comes to you for help, don't give them some money and send them on their way. If your in the position to do as such, give them work so they can get back on their feet. Or, if your not in the position to do that, help them out to the best of your abilities. That doesn't just apply to people who come to for help. If you see someone in need, or going through some bad times, you should take the time to do for them what you can.
Now for the harder part as promised earlier. The metaphysical side. The energies surrounding us, and everything with a pulse or not, are very responsive. Whatever you give or put out, you'll get back in full. If you help someone out in their time of need, you'll get help when your time comes. If you hurt or affect someone negatively, not only will you get hurt in a poetical fashion but it'll be twice as bad. It was never better said than in the old children's rhyme, "I'm rubber, your glue. Whatever bounces on me sticks to you." For Wiccans, this is known as the Three Fold Theory.
This is something that cannot be avoided or deterred no matter how badly you may want it to. The more you try to stop it, the more it'll come and harder to. Wether you believe in it or not, it'll come. Good or bad. I'll mention more on the bad sides of the Three Fold Theory in the next section, Magical Abuses.
