| Beginning Band |
| Dear Parent, We are in the process of registering students for beginning band for the current school year. The OMS Bands are recognized as among the finest bands in the country. The 8th grade Concert, Jazz, and Symphonic Bands have won 1st place in regional and national festivals in Atlanta, Washington D.C., and Orlando. No Prior Music Training Necessary. Learing to play an instrument and belonging to a school band opens up a whole new world of friendship and opportunity. Middle school band students may also particapate fully in the academic offerings in the school, athletics, and other extra-curricular activities. Each student enrolled in the band program will be expected to maintain an attitude of self-discipline and organization, Regular practice on his/her instrument will be necessary in order for satisfactory progress to be made. The encouragement of you, the parent, is of the utmost importance. The rewards will be lasting. Your child's first public performance will be in December at the Annual Christmas Concert. All students are welcome to apply. Final selection will be based on academic grades, the student's grade in music exploratory, and their school discipline record. Most parents want to know their child's chances of success in band before investing in an instrument. For this reason, most music stores have a trial/rental period with any money paid during that time (approximately $35.00 per month) applying toward the purchase. After registration has been completed and final instrument assignments have been made, we will give you very specific information regarding obtaining an instrument. No instrument rental or purchase is necessary at this time. We hope that your child will decide to become a member of the OMS Band. Members of the band are recognized as among the finest students in the school. Membership in the band program will afford your child many opportunities for self-expression, the development of self-discipline and organizational skills, mental stimulation, and the "pride" of being a member of one of the finest bands in the state of Alabama.
