***Back at the Tournament***
The fourth and second-to-last day had finally began, and the crowd was as psyched as ever. So, let's go!
*****
Fuante and Hiroshi sat across from each other in their shared hotel room, engaged in a grueling staring contest. Finally, Fuante's face broke into a grin. "Your student is up next," he stated.
"I know."
"...You can't protect him forever. He's going to have to fight on his own someday."
"..."
***Hime vs. Kevin Front***
As Kevin performed his stretching excercises on his side of the ring, he almost lost his balance as he felt strength drain from his body. {Hmm, master has drawn his power back. I'm on my own this time.} Steeling himself, he extended his mind into the area surrounding the ring, trying to locate his opponent.
Hime stretched her long silky legs back and forth and sharpened her claws on the rug. Kevin caught the loud ripping sound and winced. The sleak black panther licked her chops and walked stealthly out onto the ring for her next victim... er, opponent.
The bell rang. Kevin simply stood there, paralyzed with fear. {THAT... is a huge kitty...}
Hime inched towards Kevin, then lunged at him with her claws outstretched. {Mmm, what a tasty meal,} she thought.
Without the extra energy being fed into his body from Hiroshi, Kevin was in a panic. Instintively, he acted on the first thought that came to his head. {Uhh... cat..... umm... dog!}
Letting out a snarl, Kevin mimicked his opponent and lunged, his "paws" extended and trying his best to implant the suggestion into Hime's mind that he was a dog. {I sure hope this works!}
Hime stopped in mid air and landed on all fours, watching the flying, snarling Kevin come at her. {This kid's funny!} she thought. As Kevin flew closer she side stepped and Kevin flew by, quickly tucking into a roll as he realized he missed.
Rising to his knees, he spun around and delivered a kick to Hime's shin, hoping to disable the quite nimber leg. At the same moment, he sent out another of his suggestions, this time followed by a mental picture to make it even more convincing. [He's flipping over you.]
***Back in the Lobby***
Akaro slid casually up behind Corianna, who was staring intently at her friend in the television. Shifting his appearance to make him look a few years older, he made his move. "Hey, baby. What say we find a better way to pass the time?" {I gotta get a new pickup line.} Before the vampire could respond, the kitsune's hand started to roam downward.
Corianna grabbed his arm and twisted it behind his back, almost breaking it. "Don't touch me and don't ever call me that or I'll hurt something else," she hissed at him, shoving him forward and releasing him. He got up and laughed...
***Back in the Arena***
Hime blinked at Kevin. This kid was boring, so she bit his leg.
Kevin screamed as the fangs sank into his leg. With all the panic overriding all of his telepathic abilities, he lashed out with repeated punches to the cat's forehead, trying in vain to find release from the steel-jawed monstrosity.
As his body tired, he yelled out in frustration as the adrenaline woke up his powers for one last attack. As he let loose his final punch, Hime's eyes widened as she saw it glowing a pale green. When the fist made contact, all of the telepath's pain and anxiety were transferred to Hime, forcing her to share in his pain for a moment. Then, he fainted.
Hime shook her head to refocus, and then with a giant paw ({No claws,} she reminded herself.) she batted him like a tennis ball out of the ring so that the paramedics could attend to him right away. Licking the blood off of her chops, she streched and then yawned, trotting off the platform.
***Once Again, in the Lobby***
Seeing a male touching Corianna always made Hime mad. She growled in a low tone as she came into the room, threatening the man trying to touch Corianna.
***Amanda Yenah vs. Mark I***
Amanda grabbed her bamboo staff and headed out onto the tournament floor. She also wrapped her tail around her waist.
Mark I stepped into the arena, still a bit shakey from his bout with Xim. However, his mission had been a success, and the alien entity was finally destroyed. While the Parasyte pieces moving through his body reminded him vaguely of the difficult task he had just completed, he knew that he had to complete the Omega Tournament to deter any suspicion.
{I'm gonna make sure this is a fair fight,} Amanda thought to herself. She watched her opponent carefully. {Go ahead, Mark... make your first move....}
Mark I grinned. Suspicion. It was a bit obvious that the audience was getting suspicious about the Parasytes. After all, the shocking abilities of Phillip Xerxes and the strange "strength" of Dan Suder (who, he noted, had finally recovered from his injury), not to mention the full fledged power of the dissolved Xim. Hopefully the other deaths in the tournament had distracted from the Parasyte entrant...after all, a smooshed man and a vaporized man usually caught attention more than... warping... bodies... A vague sweat drop appeared on Mark I's forehead as he actually thought about his hope, realizing how ridiculous it was.
Mark I's grin vanished as he glimpsed his new opponent. {The tail... could she be...} Mark I shook his head. The thought was ridiculous. If the Parasyte Countermeasure Departments were doing genetic experiments, they would never put out something so obvious. Nevertheless, Mark I knew he had a tough battle ahead of him. He knew what felines were capable of, and, however this female Amanda had had her DNA altered, she was a dual danger.
He bowed in a gentlemanly manner, placing his left arm on his stomach as he bent down and extending his right arm out behind. Slowly Mark I stood up straight again, his grin blooming so wide that it distracted from the rather obvious scar on his face.
"Who says chivalry is dead, eh, Amanda?" he remarked jovially. With that, he moved his right hand out, turning the palm toward himself. He cupped it inward, subtly challenging Amanda.
Amanda brushed off the strange feeling that she got from Mark. {He's kind of suspicious,} she thought, {but then again, so am I.} Although her opponent was rather courteous, she wasn't about to take any chances relaxing. "Let's do this!" she yelled just as the starting bell rang. She dashed at her opponent, pulling her fist back for a punch, which was charged with green ki.
Having seen this strange "ki" power before in the other battles, Mark I was nevertheless unsure what to do. Sometimes the "ki" merely enhanced the user's power, while other times it literally shot out in blasts of pure energy.
Deciding to take a chance, Mark I ran towards the approaching figure of Amanda. His opponent, only slightly fazed by Mark I's approach, continued on steadily. Just as they reached each other, Mark I immediatly grabbed Amanda's clenched fist, twisting it back with inhuman strength.
{Time to see what her "ki" does,} Mark I thought.
Amanda had to act fast. If she didn't, she could say goodbye to ever using her hand again. She couldn't do a shotgun; she had to have her hand open for that. Without really thinking, she delivered a swift kick to her opponent's stomach, releasing his grip and sending him reeling. She leapt back herself, a bit sore but not in bad shape. {New plan,} she thought. {Stay alive.}
Mark had been prepared for some sort of burst of energy from the feline/human's fist; the attack to his gut was totally unexpected. Flinching in shock, Mark I moved away from the retreating figure of Amanda. However, in the split second that it took the super-human to regain his concentration, he suddenly saw a strange look of fear in Amanda's eyes.
Realizing that he probably still had more physical power than the female figure in front of him, Mark I prepared for a more direct onslaught of kicks and punches. The fear, Mark I deduced, would aid him in his full frontal attack. Psychological warfare and all.
Unfortunatly, the Parasyte shards in his right arm chose that moment to swim to another area, leaving Mark I with a useless limb.
Slight sweat broke out on the super-human's forehead as his right arm dangled conspicuously at his side. {Ah crackers, now what do I do?!}
{He could just be trying to trick me,} thought Amanda, eyeing the arm suspiciously. {But something tells me that he's lost his strength there. If I try to do a ki attack, he'll probably....}
{Hey, there's an idea,} she thought to herself. She kicked her shoes off and put them on her hands. Once again, she charged at her opponent, looking determined despite having shoes on her hands.
Mark I's eyes bulged at his opponent's new strategy. Not only had Amanda seemingly realized Mark I's weakness, but the shoes made the danger dual. Unable to utilize his right arm, Mark I took a ready stance with his legs, shifting them slightly to allow for better movement under "fire." He raised his left arm to defend himself. {I wonder if they'll fix this problem of mine,} Mark I wondered to himself.
Just as she approached Mark, Amanda threw the shoes off her hands to reveal two glowing green fists. {I don't think he can evade it at this range,} thought Amanda. "SHOTGUN!!" she yelled with outstretched palms. "Try and avoid THIS!"
{Aw, mutilated corpses!} screamed Mark I inwardly as the huge orbs of pure green energy hurtled towards him. Mere seconds before the blast struck, feeling returned to his right arm, and in a flurry of movement Mark I crossed his right and left arms in an act of desperate defense.
The blast struck with full force, nearly shattering Mark I's senses. A tingling/burning sensation swept through his arms, become duller but still just as noticable throughout his whole body. Strangely enough, his skin was not burned, something Mark I had expected from a "ki" blast such as that.
{Perhaps a "ki" blast isn't supposed to burn after all,} Mark I mused. Nevertheless, the damage was done, so while Mark I had full control over his right arm again, he was still a bit shakey from the unexpected and powerful "ki" attack.
Calculating that Amanda had to charge for a time to unleash another attack of that sort, Mark I dove in to combat again, tossing aside his fears from the disturbing experience, and unleashed a karate-kick to Amanda head.
Amanda got a weird idea as she dodged back from the attack. {What have I seen in the fights earlier... I think I know what to do. I've never tried this technique before, but here goes. I just hope this really IS his weakness...}
Amanda stretched out her arms and legs, and brought her palms together. "Special Modified Tech: Furious Dragon Flame Rings!" Almost immediately, the entire arena began to warm up. "Haa!" yelled Amanda as she sent flaming rings in Mark's direction. {I really hope this works,} she thought.
Mark I stared in disbelief at the rings of flame, dropping quickly out of his karate-kick to initiate evasive maneuvers. Obviously, his opponent was trying to exploit a desired area of Mark I, but what it was the superhuman had no idea. As for newly heated arena, he merely broke a stronger sweat. Swerving with unbeforeseen agility, Mark I deftly leapt out of the path fire rings, although a few did singe his clothes slightly. Unfazed, he darted toward the tired looking figure of Amanda, whose face held an expression of absolute shock.
The pieces had fallen together in that nanosecond. Amanda had seen the match with Phillip Xerxes vs Corianna, and had merely tied superhuman power/extraterrestrial power into one another (which wasn't a bad connection, at least in the present circumstances), and had used Phillip Xerxes' weakness against Mark I. Obviously, it wasn't the right one.
Realization aside, Mark I, already mere meters away from his opponent, commenced a roundhouse kick, catching the winded Amanda dead in the neck, sending her pinwheeling to the ground in pain.
Amanda cursed a few times as she struggled to get back up. "There goes all my ki..." She managed to get off the ground and back on her feet, just barely avoiding another kick. {He's a lot stronger than me, I'll give him that. Even though I don't have any ki left, I'm still not going down without a fight. If I can just catch my breath...}
It was a little late for that, though. Mark was delivering another punch, which Amanda blocked with her right arm. She thought she heard something crack, but it didn't really worry her. She quickly countered with a kick to Mark's stomach, sending him back a bit.
Mark I recovered quickly from Amanda's wild kick. After hearing the vague crack, the superhuman knew he had the advantage. His opponent had used up all her "inward" energy with all her "ki" attacks, and was extremely weaker at this point. Amanda's body literally shuddered with every strike that Mark I scored, while Mark I grew more used to his opponent's tactics with every turn.
Suddenly, the superhuman felt a strange pulsing in his arms. Looking down, Mark I feared the feeling was a delayed reaction from the first "ki" attack Amanda had unleashed. Instead, he saw two very beefed up arms.
{What in the...?!} he thought in confusion. But beyond his confusion, Mark I felt power like never before in his arms. Unsure whether the power-up was a trick or an accident (or both), Mark I unleashed another flurry of blows to the weakened Amanda.
The feline figure took hit after hit, as superpowered arms collided with tired arms and stomach muscles and superhuman legs made strong kicks against weakened defenses. Amanda, taking far too much damage standing her ground, began falling back from the attacks. Sensing victory, Mark I made a grab for the faltering Amanda's tail.
That had apparently broken the final straw.
For some reason, he was pushed back a bit by some strange force. "NOBODY touches the tail!" yelled an angry Amanda. Although she could barely stand up, it seemed like she was gaining energy.
***West Lobby***
{He souldn't have done that,} thought Tofu, sitting in the lobby. {But, where's the energy coming from? No way... her life energy is going down... if she's not careful, she'll kill herself! I hope you know what you're doing, Amanda...}
***In the Arena***
It seemed like Amanda's muscles were getting a bit larger as her expression changed to extreme anger. A confused Mark staggered back. {Could it be that she has parasytes in her, too?} Energy surging through her body, she made a final, desprate attack on Mark.
Throwing punch after punch, she found out she wasn't really pushing her opponent back by much. {I guess he's been preparing for this,} thought Amanda.
"Two School Technique: Omega Flare Desparation Attack!!"
Amanda snapped her wrists together, and a large white beam shot out, crashing into the suprised Mark.
The moment Amanda began to become infuriated was the moment Mark I knew he had made a tactical error. Obviously, Amanda was very protective of her tail, to say the least. As the energy blast burrowed itself into Mark I's chest, the superhuman did the only thing he could do.
He flew backwards.
But hardly on his own power. The sheer energy unleashed by the blast was what caused Mark I to hurtle backwards. Meter by meter the wave of energy surged him back. Finally, as Mark I thought his chest would burst from the blast, he fell backwards, hitting cold stone.
And the outside of the ring.
Seeing the fallen combatant's distress, the announcer quickly rang the ending buzzer. The crowd erupted into a frenzy. Such a victory was quite an upset, for Mark I had received quite a following since his climatic defeat of Xim. However, the roar slowly died down, and a wave of applause was awarded to the victorious Amanda.
In the meantime, Mark I lay shocked and surprised, but not at all distressed about his defeat. After all, his mission had been a success. As he tried to rise, however, the superhuman felt in insane power building in his chest. It made him woozy. Quickly, Mark I felt himself losing his balance. All at once, he felt something inside of him literally explode.
As Mark I hit the cold stone once again, this time unconcious, a mirrored beam of energy careened into the victorious Amanda.
{Well, crap,} thought Amanda as her very own attack came flying back at her. Lacking almost any energy at all, she did the only thing she could- she raised her arms up to protect herself, which didn't help much. Being hit by her strongest attack was a lot worse than she ever thought it would be. She felt her feet leave the ground, and hard stone behind her. Finally, the beam of energy stoped. She noticed Mark lying outside the center platform, unconcious. "I won... fair... this time...." said Amanda as she fell to the ground.
"Dammit, no!" yelled Tofu, bursting into the arena floor.
"Please, sir, stay back! We have trained professionals working here!" said one of the medics surrounding Amanda. Tofu just responded with a punch to the stomach, and forcing his way through.
"She's stopped breathing, and there's no heartbeat," said another medic. "There's no sign of- what are you doing, sir? Stay back!" Upon these words, he saw an insane look of anger, fear, and sadness in the boy's eyes. For some reason, the medic felt compelled to move away. Tofu slowly walked up to his fallen friend.
"I really, really hope this works," he said, shaking. He held out his left palm above Amanda's chest, and clasped his left wrist with his right hand. He closed his eyes, and his hands began to glow a strange orange color.
Soon after, a strange, orange wave emerged from his hand, and into Amanda's body. Before medics could stop him, however, they noticed something. "Life... life signs returning to normal! Heartbeat, breathing... she's back to normal! This kid did it!"
Amanda woke up, and picked herself up off the ground. At the same time, Tofu ended up passing out, saying something like, "that drains a lotta energy..." The medics, seeing no problems with Amanda besides some cuts and scrapes, (and the fact that she told them repediately that she was okay) checked Tofu.
"His lifesigns are weak, but I think he's going to be okay."
***Somewhere in the United States***
"I WANT ANSWERS, NOT IMBICILES!" bellowed a deep voice.
Lieutenant Jones shuddered at the earful onslaught that his commanding officer was giving him. Being located in an underground bunker with only the lights of the Master Condition Monitor and a number of other monitors, the room was cramped and sound amplified. These facts did little to deter the constant shouting spouts of the Commander.
Lieutenant Villa, a fellow situation monitor soldier of Jones, turned to reply to the Commander. "Sir, we honestly don't know what happened. We have no idea why subject Mark I absorbed the first blast, but reflected the second."
Hidden behind conspicuously well placed shadows, the partially obscured visage of the Commander sneered. "More idiodic and imbecillic replies. I want ANSWERS, not more QUESTIONS!"
Jones flinched as the shouting reverberrated into his ears again. The yelling wasn't on his nerves; no, it was far over them, and going.
"Sir," said a harried Villa, "our engineers and scientists are still anylzing the data our hidden monitors and cameras managed to capture. In order to fully understand what happened, we are going to have to apprehend subj..."
Villa was drowned out by the angry Commander. "Yes yes, we're going to have to capture subject Mark I. I KNOW THAT! You think I don't KNOW THAT ALREADY?!"
Jones gripped in mouse. He had to get used to it, he just had to.
The Commander, oblivious to Jones' distress, continued. "Just GET ME ANSWERS FROM THE RESEARCH DEPARTMENT! NOW! YOU HEAR ME?! NOW!!"
Lieutenant Villa opened his mouth to reply, thought better of it, instead turning around and going back about his business.
Next to him, Lieutenant Jones grinned wildly. He knew he was in the Parasyte/Human Enhancement Branch of the Parasyte Defense Initiative for the safety of all mankind... but Jones didn't know how long he could stand the Commander's innate ability to annoy the wits out of him.
As the information came in, he could only hope that his brother had not died in vain in service to Department 3 of the PDI...
***Saburo Shinmen vs. Jake Hazuki***
Saburo stepped into the arena as they called out his fight. He quickly reviewed what he remembered about his opponent from previous fights: primarily uses some sort of gun, posses simple hand-to-hand combat skills, often leaps before he looks with hilarious results.
Nodding to himself, he reached over his shoulder and drew his shinai. This would be an interesting match.
Jake nearly passed out at the realization of who he was fighting. "Let's see," Tofu had said to him mocklingly, "the klutzy 16 year old against a master swordsman." He looked at the screen just to be sure, but when he turned back, he noticed two things- Jake was already gone, and that a wooden sword and a katana were missing. As he let out a deep sigh, he thought, {I STILL don't get how he does that...}
Meanwhile, Jake readied himself for the doubtless onslaught. He held out the wooden sword that he had "borrowed," muttering something about dying. With a hard swallow, he prepared himself for an attack...
Saburo flashed his evil smile, and then without warning charged straight at Jake. Just before he reached his target, however, he jumped right over Jake. Before Jake had a chance to react, the end of Saburo's shinai was resting on his shoulder.
"You've got guts," Saburo said, his back to his opponent. "You're taking me on on my own terms. I'd say that either you're really foolish or you're just getting started."
Jake went from a trickle of sweat to an absolute flood. At this point, he had two choices:
a) Jump out, faint, or do anything that made him look like a total loser, or
b) Die, and look like a total loser at the same time.
Limited, aren't they? Then he got an idea. It wasn't the best he ever had, but it was about his only hope. He shifted the sword to his right hand, and once again pulled out his gun in his left. He figured if he was going to get the crap beaten out of him, he might as well go down trying.
Saburo face-faulted. Quickly jumping back a few feet, he said, "Oh well. At least I'll see something new: fighting with a sword and a gun at the same time." With that, he charged at Jake again, dodging to Jake's right at the last second, then jumping left, intentionally striking Jake's sword with his shinai.
Jake managed to hold on to his sword... but weighing less than a feather on the moon didn't help much. In fact, Jake's whole body went flying across the arena, making a rather amusing spectacle. Without much time to react, he jammed his sword into the space between some of the tiles, managing to swing his body around the edge of the arena and land lightly on his feet. Shaken quite a bit, he managed to stay standing, and quickly lowered his Blaster (with a stun round loaded) and made a blind shot at the charging Saburo.
Saburo quickly broke off into a roll to the right, then charged in from the left with a downward sweep.
"Well, crap."
That was basically what came to mind just before a blow to the head rendered Jake nearly unconcious, and sending him flying. As he hit the ground rolling, he ended up stopping just short of the edge, his left leg hanging off. "Well, here goes," he said, holding his hand out. After muttering something, his hand registered a flurry of sparks, but not much more. "This ain't my day..." said Jake softly, as he awaited his defeat.
Saburo shrugged, pushing Jake off the ring with his foot. "I'm sorry, you seem like a nice guy. But I have something to prove, and so I can't let that get in my way."
***Corianna MacNullen vs. Luke Masterson***
Luke took a horse stance as soon as he reached his spot. He had seen Corianna's strange, seemingly magical abilities. Truly, he thought, this was going to be his first challenge in the tournament.
Corianna was full from her last victim and felt really lazy. Oh well. She flew onto the stage in part bat, part human form with her claws unsheathed and sword glowing in her hand. Lazily she checked out Luke. He was hot but looked a bit... abused. Maybe that wasn't the right word. She didn't like the dark energy she felt from this demon. He looked funny in his whatever stance that was. She stood there. "Well demon, let's go. I could really care less if you throw me out now or if you don't." Corianna yawned. She'd come looking for Kyorei or Kyojin and hadn't found either.
*****
The demonic hybrid known as Akaro leered at Corianna like a hawk eyeing its prey... or like a hormonal teenager girl-watching at a beach. {Oh, she could be fun later.}
Tofu couldn't decide which was weirding him out more; the fact that the seven-tailed... thing had suddenly materialized in the room following a burst of smoke or that he was starting to mutter to himself, giggling madly. Whichever it was, he slowly started to back towards the wall.
As Tofu backed away, he noticed Amanda doing much the same thing. "What is that... uh... fox?" he said to Amanda, confused.
"You expect me to know?" came the sharp reply. Then, a bit more calmly, "Maybe it's some sort of demon. I dunno. Either way, I'm not getting near the thing."
Dave, the only one of them that wasn't unsettled, gave a passing glance at the multi-tailed being. He could sense the fact that it was a demon... he had dealt with them before, but he wasn't sure what it's purpose was.
*****
Luke put both hands in front of him, palms facing Corianna, forming a triangle with his fingers. "You think I'm a demon?" He smirked. "I'm flattered." His countenance darkened. "Now die!" With that, he launched a powerful wave of shadow energy at his opponent.
Corianna blocked the blast just in time but she was still knocked back some. Her red aura of defense glowed brightly and shielded her from the dark energy blast. {Hmmm, I don't think this'll be a push over,} she thought. Then she smiled and charged at Luke with her claws held above her head. "WOLF'S CLAW!" she snarled as she slashed downward at Luke's chest.
Luke intercepted the claws with his right arm, his dark aura protecting him from sharpness in general, and punched straight at Corianna with his other, a punch which was blocked by her sword. For several moments, the two stood perfectly still in that position, and the audience began to wonder what happened.
Then, quite suddenly, they shot off in opposite directions, each landing on their back inches from the edge of the ring.
Corianna tried to heave herself up, but felt a heavy "fist" on her. She deflected as much as she could with her sword but some of it seared her body. Her healing powers weren't working fast enough and she weakened. Still, as Luke approached once more Corianna stood up, determined not to be smashed like some lousy cockroach.
Suddenly, Luke burst forward, sending his fist into Corianna's face. "You--!" she yelled, careening out of the ring.
As the announcer declared him the winner, Luke wiped some blood from three deep gashes in his cheek with his sleeve. Taking a look at the red liquid on his fingers, he said, "What a quaint going away present."
***That Night, Luke's Room***
Mirsky entered the room, a falcon perched on his shoulder. "Luke, are you ready for tomorrow?"
Luke looked up from where he had been sitting, staring blankly at the wall. He was a depressing sight, dark rings under his eyes and blood-soaked bandage on his cheek. "Yes."
Mirsky snorted. "Are you certain? This is not just any tournament you are about to win. Tomorrow is the day that we settle the score once and for all."
"What do you mean?" Luke asked, cocking his eyebrow.
"I have a present for you," Mirsky said, taking two gauntlets from his knapsack.
***Even later, a few hundred miles from Las Vegas***
Kenji looked at the horizon, outrage burning in his eyes. "It's all over now, Mirsky!" With that, he continued his run.
***A little closer to Las Vegas***
Tiger was sprinting full force towards the city.
