Pictures and reflections of our 1997 hike

(click on the link to see the full pic)
At the Punch Bowl shelter trail, trying to figure out which way to go!
Seems like we all agreed which way to go!
On top of Bluff Mountain, all covered with sweat . . .
Memorial plaque to "Little Ottie" Powel at the top of Bluff Mountain. According to local history, he was lost in November 1891, remains were found in April 1892.
Wider view of the plaque
One of the many signs marking a trail juncture on the AT.
At Salt Log Gap. Why did you guys stop? What's everybody looking at?
Holy snake-bite commander! It's a timber rattler (or canebrake rattlesnake if you prefer)!!!
Look at the set of rattles on that baby! It's got to be seven or more years old! (look at the middle, right 1/3 of the picture, the tail of the snake is next to the trail, wish I'd had a telephoto outfit)
One of the shelters along the trail.
Taking a "breath" at one of the many scenic views.
A view of the James River gorge looking Northeast.
Another view looking East down the gorge toward the US 501 bridge where it crosses the James River (kind of hazy, hard to see the bridge).
Some more scenic views.
On top of Apple Orchard Mountain, the highest point along the AT for over 1000 miles (it's actually easier to hike than the Priest!).
The end of this year's hike! A much needed swim in Jenning's Creek!
Drying out on the rocks on the bank of Jenning's Creek.
Some strange-looking creatures we discovered in Jenning's Creek. They have the ability to assume the physical characteristics of Royal Rangers.
Side trips to Natural Bridge on Tuesday, 8 July and Friday 11 July
The Natural Bridge! One of the seven natural wonders of the World!
Cooling our toes in the "Lost River" (no one knows its source).
Inside the saltpeter mine. Sodium Nitrate was mined here to make gunpowder for our forces during the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812.
Looking out from inside the mine.
Inside the Natural Bridge caverns (11 July).
Catching a "loose" rock inside the caverns!
The falls at the end of the trail at Natural Bridge.
MORE PICS TO COME!
