The CAD group has been spearheading the promotion and use of CAD technology in the Country.
Over the years it has provided support to Industries in the
fields of Engineering, Automobile and Civil Structures Design.
It has acquired one of the world's best software packages, called SESAM, for the design of large
engineering structures including those for offshore oil platforms.
Some of the important projects completed by CAD Group are:
Free vibration analysis of connecting Rod for Maruti Udyog Ltd.
Non-linear Analysis of rear suspension of VAN for Maruti Udyog Ltd.
3-D free vibration analysis of crank shaft for Maruti Udyog Ltd.
3-D static analysis of Lakhwaria Arch Dam for U.P. Irrigation Department.
Penstock tunnel for Chamera Hydro Electric Project for NHPC.
Analysis of quarter model of Taj Mahal for Roorkee University.
Gearing blank weight reduction, Rollers of the continuous casting machine etc. for
Heavy Engineering Corporation.
Evaluation of offshore oil structures for ONGC.
Currently developing a Java based distributed 2D&3D CAD/CAM and CAE
software system. This is being developed using Java3D, RMI and is based on
a 3-tier distributed computing architecture. It uses open software standards
( OpenCASCADE 3D modelling engine, J.Peterson Speech API, StoredObjects Database,
Python/Tcl Scripting ) to achieve inter application operability. It is implemented
on STEP standards for product data exchange.
The SESAM software package,imported form Norway, has been extensively modified by NIC.
Consultancy has been provided to companies such as Maruti Udyog Ltd; Heavy Engineering Corporation,
Ranchi; and Hindustan Machines Tools, Bangalore for setting up CAD centres, as well as for analysis of
some of the major projects.
NIC has also provided extensive training to their engineers. It has signed an agreement with
WIPRO for marketing SESAM software on the hardware platforms supported by them.
NIC is now in the process of acquiring CIM Technology through a NORAD-aided project.
Some of the other work done by the CAD group are as follows:
Development of software to suit the requirements of Designers in the area of steel fabrication,
reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete.
Development of software in the area of Finite Element to take advantage of the vectorizer in
i860 machine. A speed up of 6 to 8 has been observed from non-vectorized element formulation to
vectorized element formulations.
Development of Engineering Data Base for efficient data management in finite element analysis.
The next version will be object-oriented Engineering Data base.
Use of AI tools in DBMS and CAD applications (Knowledge Base Engineering Design)
Developing seismic analysis facility for non-frame structures and integrating this in SESAM software.
Development of Quad tree/Octtree-based meshing algorithms.
Development of field problem analysis features and integrating them with SESAM software.
Developing GUI facility for SESAM software
Parallelising SESTRA, a SESAM module for linear static/dynamic solver, on PARAM machine.
Another CAD Package is ICEM DDN which is extremly used in field of CAD/CAM. This is imported from
ICEM Technology USA.ICEM DDN (Integrated Computer Aided Engineering and Manufacturing Design Drafting
Numerical Control) is the platform for all simultaneous Engineering solution.
It is core of all control Data's(now PTC's) ICEM Products.In corporating graphics functions
and processes for computer aided product development,ICEM DDN is to be used by technical drafters,
designers and Engineers.
ICEM DDN is an interactive system, offering a common foundation for the entire product development
cycle from the first conceptual design through detailing and documentation to the preparation
of NC manufacturing data.
The right combination of the various building blocks provides the optimum,tailormade solution
for every design, analysis or manufacturing job.
ICEM DDN combines these components- comprehensiveness, openness,flexibility,interoperability along
with a simple yet powerful usr interface to provide you with a modern CAD/CAM software package which
has been tailored exactly to your requirements.
ICEM DDN is an open system which is used for product development worldwide by over 600 companies
in a wide range of different industries.
The modular system architecture, organised into individual function components, provides a high
degree of flexibility.
The consistent common database for 3D and 2D models as well as the uniform user interface allow
you to design in 3D space wherever necessary and to confine your designs to two dimensions wherever
this is more economical.
The powerful 2D module of ICEM DDN supports a wide variety of design tasks,including easy trimming,
extruding,filleting and section lining.
The NC modules of ICEM DDN offer you all common NC programming methods from 2 1/2 axis willing upto
5 axis m/c operations.As an open system, ICEM DDN supports data exchange with other applications
via IGES,VDA/IS,VDA/FS,DXF and STEP.
Utility Mapping Division
The Utility-Mapping Unit is involved in digital mapping, establishing ground control using modern methods and overlaying utility networks like water, sewage,
electricity, tele- communication and road network, in addition to the on ground features.
The group is fully equipped with specialised hardware like global
positioning system receivers and software to cater to the specific facilities management requirements. The group also offers consultancy in the area of city
infrastructure management.
Currently, the group is involved in utility mapping for Delhi city. This group has also taken up applications on route optimization, traffic
regularisation and traffic corridor synchronization for various agencies.
A software called PreMap has been developed on the UNIX platform which is a very
cost effective presentation mapping package inIndia.,/p>
