   SQUIRRELS, GUNS, AND EVOLUTION

Before reading on, look at the pictures to the left of the page. Keep track in your head how much these images affect you. In paticular, how much fear do these pictures instill in you. Get a good idea of this and read on.

If you are like most people, you have an inherent fear of snakes, spiders, and scorpions.  Fear is not a bad thing, it is a necessary emotion. Our ancestors who lacked this inherent fear and respect of possibly deadly animals... well died. Keep in mind that humans evolved for thousands upon thousands of years with deadly snakes, scorpions, and spiders. However guns are a relatively recent invention. Therefore the gun most certianly didn't invoke the primal fear that the creaturs did. Even though they are much more deadly.

The campfire is a different twist to the story. Again, for thousands upon thousands of years, our ancestors used fire to ward off threatening animals. A controlled fire was a defense from nature. So, if the fire did not instill any fear in you, that's ok. In all probability, it should have the adverse affect, and be seen as peaceful and cozy. This is the reason souragate fiireplaces are found in homes, even when they give off no heat.

Every year around the beginning of hunting season come the stories of hunters snuffing themselves out. Or the story of the child who discovers the handgun and kills themselves. We have all heard the stories. And while we are forced to feel sympathy for these people, we must think of them as our early ancestors who sought refuge cuddling with a snake. The ancestor who lacked the necessary genes to fear what should be feared. It is necessary, and all part of evolution. So... next time you run over a cute little squirrel on the highway, don't feel bad. That squirrel had no sense to avoid giant steel objects moving at high speeds. That squirrels children would have not the sense to avoid giant steel objects moving at high speeds. The squirrel you didn't hit is the one that deserves to live.
