| Straight-up facts about the building: |
| It was built in the year 1942, and started out as a gorgeous, huge building that was neatly trimmed and ready to use. It cost $3,500,000 and had 400 beds. *First, it was used as a Tuberculosis testing center, and it was called "The W.T. Edwards Tuberculosis Hospital" *Second, on March 4th, 1968, it reopened (after a closing due to the discovery of Tuberculosis treatment), and was Christened "Sunland" after the name of the other hospital in Orlando that they got 18 children from. It was used primarily as a mentally retarded children's hospital, and an adult facility where basically all the people with mental retardation were placed. (NOTE: NOT mentally ILL people, mentally RETARDED people). *Third, in 1983, it closed, and no one has yet to give me a rational explanation as to why. Here are some reasons I have heard: FROM A LADY WHO WORKED IN SUNLAND FOR 15 YEARS UP UNTIL THE CLOSE: *****FIRE HAZARD: Had there been a fire, the children on the fifth floor in wheelchairs would be unable to get out. HOW IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE: So why didn't they just move the wheelchair children to the first floor? And why does it still look like everyone just ran and left everything behind inside the building? FROM OTHER SOURCES: *****MISTREATING THE PATIENTS: This makes sense, I guess you could close it down because of mistreatment, but: HOW IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE: Why don't they just purge the staff and hire new people, or move the patients somewhere else instead of shutting down the whole building? Plus, I heard from a lady who knows all about the building and works next door to it that the nurses loved the patients. *****ASBESTOS: Yes, but it could have been replaced with some other type of material instead of abandoning the facility. HOW IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE: Asbestos wasn't deemed harmful until several years afterwards. *****A MOVEMENT AROUND THE EARLY 1980'S TO FREE PEOPLE FROM INSTITUTIONS: This is also what I heard from the lady who knows all about Sunland, and I've also heard it from several other sources... I am going to believe that this is the reason why! HOW IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE: I can't think of how it doesn't! And many other reasons that still leave the close unexplained. Why would everyone just abandon this huge building that costed millions to make? Nothing makes sense, and when I asked the state about it, they said thay they were not allowed to talk about it and hung up in my face... It is extremely dangerous to enter the building, yet people continue to do it anyway, tagging the inside and the roof, doing elicit drugs, or simply where the homeless come to rest for the night if they need a place to stay. These people must not know the severity of breathing in asbestos. It can be very dangerous. If you are exposed to it long enough or get enough of it in your lungs, you could get a form of cancer called Mesothilioma. It develops in the lungs or the abdomen and symptoms may take as long as 30 years to show up.The simple way out is to not enter the hospital under any circumstances! There's nothing much to see inside from what I have heard, and even if the fact that asbestos lingers inside doesn't scare you, the fact that it's highly illegal and many have been caught, fined, and arrested, should. Please do not enter the hospital!! There's a barbed-wire fence around it for a reason... ------------------------------------------------------------- If you are someone who works for the state of Florida and know ANYTHING about why the building was really closed and/or where all the patients went, PLEASE let me know. Thank you. |
