Bangkok shopping is an
exciting experience for great shoppers - whatever you are
looking for, from the luxury, modern, air-conditioned malls, to
the busy and noisy markets along the road, Bangkok has it all.
Practice your bargaining skill using
Thai and wear a big smile - an important 'tool' to
help you fetch the best prices - and enjoy your shopping
experience.

Siam Square
Siam Square is a large, modern and trendy shopping and entertainment area in downtown. The area
connects to other important shopping centres, such as Siam Center/Siam Discovery
Center,
MBK Center and
Siam Paragon.
Within Siam Square itself, there is a wide range of shops and
services, including tutor schools, restaurants, cafe, designer
clothing boutiques, record stores, bookshops,
Hard Rock Cafe
and banks. The customers vary from school and college
students to office workers and foreign tourists. It is sometimes
referred to as the "Shinjuku
of Thailand".The central area of Siam Square is an open area
named Center Point, which normally hosts activities or
special events every weekend.

"Siam Paragon"

"Central Wolrd Plaza"
From Siam Square
there is a walkway
which is less than a kilometer long which you can stroll along and
visit other famous shopping centers such as Central World Plaza, and
Central Chidlom. The normal opening time is from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
everyday. At these shops, the prices of the goods are fixed and you
can’t bargain.
How
to get there: By far
the quickest way to get to Siam Square is by BTS – Siam Square
is the main interchange station. A taxi from central Bangkok
will cost 50-60 Baht depending on traffic.
Markets
Markets in Bangkok are
still the best places to find some great bargains. Apart from
the popular tourist markets like Chatuchak and Suan Lum Night Bazaar, local markets and
wholesale markets are worth a visit too.
Chatuchak Market:
A
heaven for shoppers, especially if they are ready to bargain. At
the weekend it becomes the biggest market in Thailand. There are
about 8,000 shops from all parts of the country. The market is
divided into 26 areas. The kinds of products to be found include
antiques, books and magazines, fashions, food, furniture,
handicrafts, jewellery, paintings, pets, plants, and
miscellaneous items.

How to get
there:
Take the sky train (BTS) to
Mor Chit station and exit down the right-hand stairs, follow the
crowd for a five-minute walk and you're there. Another option is
to take the subway (MRT) to Chatuchak Park station, and follow
the signs. The market opens from 8am to 8pm on
weekends and Fridays (wholesale day). Plant shops are open
Wednesdays and Thursdays too from 7 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Suan Lum Night Bazaar
This is a night market, which
is described as the VIP outdoor market of Bangkok (where you're
always welcome, of course). Covered walkways with snack bars
provide perhaps the most luxurious (outdoor) market shopping
experience in the city. There are several bars as well as Thai,
Italian, German, and even Mexican restaurants located in the
market area. You can see the crowd while enjoying a drink, yet
away from the market's hustle-and-bustle. In the same area, you
can enjoy the famous
Joe Louis Puppet Theatre, a classical Thai puppetry. You can
enjoy the dinner and watch the puppet show at the same time.
The market opens from 6pm to 10 p.m. everyday.
How to get
there: Take the MRT
subway to Lumpini station; the market is near Lumpini Park, a
short walk from the station.
