| Component A: In this first site Sonoma State Historic Park you will find lots of information about the Sonoma Mission and its surrounding buildings. It tells of who built the mission the historical findings after it was taken over by the state. It is a great site with information like the Blue Wing Inn was Sonomas first saloon. And it has lots of information on the restoration of the Sonoma Mission which was last worked on in 1953-54. It goes through the complex building by building and even tells about the buildings that are not there anymore. This is a good site for finding out about the Mission. This site is basically for the actual Mission, the buildings, the restoration, the complex. Lots of info. The second site Mission San Francisco Solano tells more of the Mexican connection to the Mission and how Fr. Jose Altimira had an idea and wanted to build north of San Francisco and so he did.It tells of the trials and tribulations of the Mission and how it was almost lost to decay and ruin. This site is more about the reason and the people of its inhabitants and constructors. Great site! The third site Mission San Francisco Solano de Sonoma is about alot of the same things but it has a picture of how the square looked in 1850, if you open the page and the picture of the chapel is all you see click on the return to mission home page that is where the picture is.The site tells more in depth history of the Mission and has a couple of pictures also. The mission has endured alot and this site goes into that detail. Good site love the old painting of the square. Component B: Hello I am the Sonoma Mission located in Sonoma California. I was thought up and built in 1823 by a Father Jose Altimira and his indian labor. I was the 21 st mission built and the only one built under the Mexican era. I was built to bring the indigenious people in and convert them to Christianity. In one year alone my inventory was that of 6000 sheep and goats, 900 horses, 13 mules, 50 pigs and 3,500 heads of cattle. I was a very prosperous mission. But I only lasted for 11 years until I was shut down in 1834 when the Mexican Congress closed all the missions. Then I ran into trouble my walls and buildings began to crumble and with my surrounding town growing people stole my timbers and wood to build other buildings and until Mariano J. Vallejo came I thought I would just rust and corrode away, but he began to rebuild me and in 1841 he built a churh where my original church site was and turned the mission into a military resting spot. My rooms and buildings were turned into what the army needed such as,barracks retail store, an inexpensive hotel and later a winery. I was the Frontera del Norte,The Mexican provincial frontier of the north. General Vallejo rebuilt the Mission and moved to a beautiful home about a half mile from my plaza. He lived there for 35 years and when when he hit hard times he sold me and in 1933 I was bought by the State of California were upon I was restored back to my original splendor. Please come and visit me and learn about my history. If you listen closely you can still hear the fathers talking in the chapel. Signed The Sonoma Mission |
