I used to live in Las Vegas, and Hoover Dam was about 20 minutes from my front door. Althought it was just down the street, I only went there about once every 2 or 3 years. It was a cool place to take visiting friends and relatives to see. Anyhow, one day while driving across the dam, I had the idea that this would make a kewl Half-Life map. There was this humongous tunnel - ever see the movie Cherry 2000? They showed them dropping a car into this tunnel, this is where they filmed it. There is a walkway kinda above it, so you can walk above it and look into it - it's huge. Back in the mid 1980's when the water level of Lake Mead was real high, they lowered the spillways and had an incredible amount of water roaring through this tunnel, but it's been dry for many years now. So I thought the tunnel would look good in a Half-Life map. There was an upper dam area with towers, water, ladders and stuff. The lower dam had ramps, open areas, stuff to hide behind, etc. Overall, it was cool looking and I envisioned making a Half-Life map that was a replica of this. Thus started my adventures into map making hell. I quickly discovered bugs...um...features...um...limitations of the Valve Hammer and Half-Life itself. My huge glorius outdoor replica of Hoover Dam looked incredible - and ran at about 3fps. Beauitiful to behold, but unplayable. I quickly learned that Half-Life couldn't efficiently handle large outside areas, so it's slowly mutated into it's present form. Doesn't really look anything like Hoover Dam anymore. So that is how this whole thing started. It's big - probalby too big - but by the time I realized how big it still was after chopping the snot out of it, it was too late to do anything about it. If you have a more-or-less modern computer, like a 1GHz or faster cpu and a GeForce2 or better, then this map will scream. If you have somthing older and slower, you are going to have fps problems here and there, but it's not really that bad. Unless you have an old antiquated machine, you should not have any problems with this map. Also, if there are only a few players in the map, you may have trouble finding someone to play with or shoot at. Other then that, this is a fun map. There is a long subway with a car that you can ride around on. There are a few booby traps, a couple goodies hidden here and there, a few hidden rooms, a large open area at the bottom of the dam where you can run around and shoot at people. |
