| Ok, I talked to Nate online, and this is everything he told me about the songs in HIS words.. Enjoy! -- Ashley |
| The First Single- " I worked at an office job and was getting ready to go to school... it was very very boring so i had a lot of time to think of music... and I would get depressed that I wasn't doing anything musically... but I had a 4 track demo that Sam had made... so I would take all of my breaks and just listen to it trying to figure out a melody and lyrics at the time I had a fall out with a lot of old friends... so I kinda wrote it about that... kinda wrote it as a mission statement as to what Sam and I were doing." Wait,Wait,Wait- " We came up with the concept for the song (musically/melodically) around the time of The First Single... but we didn't touch it again until we went to record " Interventions and Lullabies" and I wanted it to be a Prince like song... it turned out much differently... it was the first song we worked on for " Interventions" so a lot of it was based on the excitement of leaving home to record... at the time I was also having a random freakout about dying (I do that occasionally)... its also a bit of a mission statement." Give It Up- " I was listening to a lot of " The Boss" when I wrote those lyrics... wondering what all my old friends were up to... we kinda parted ways when we graduated... the bridge is about people who graduated high school and still go to high school parties... not cool." Tie The Rope- " I know someone that can't even focus on a conversation when a famous person is within a 4 mile radius... its annoying... makes me want to kill myself." Tune Out- " My girlfriend and I would go to Oreganos a lot (3 time a week...)... it was the only thing saving our relationship... she was tired of doing nothing but being boring... I was sad cause she changed... it didn't help that she would try to explain it... only making me feel worse... the funniest part about the song is that it was prior to the 51 being under construction... now its really backed up." I'm Ready I Am- " About a few things... expectations are annoying... also about my relationship becoming apathetic... at the time I needed to make sense of everything in my life... I needed some sort of answer so that I could make sense of all the craziness." On Your Porch- " Based on everything that happened the day before we left to record... the first verse is regarding my relationship... my promise not to change.. very ironic... the second was about my parents... they were always supportive... but they said a lot of things before I left... the third verse I had prewritten from a hotel room one night we were out in LA." Sore Thumb- " I wrote the lyrics the very last day in the studio... I was in a serious relationship at the time and just had a feeling that it was going to end a certain way... I wrote about it... thats how it ended." A Mess To Be Made- " I was in an arguement over the phone once... and the person I was talking with was with a friend who I heard over the phone say " Why don't you write a song about it".. I thought it was a clevar thing to say (just kidding)... the most unfunny thing you can say to someone is " why don't you write a song about it"... its just not very clever... but nonetheless I did...I pretty much hate LA..." L.M.T.M.A.C.- " Theres a point where you argue with someone but you know its not over... even though you say it is... that sums up the feeling of the song." Career Day- " Very ironic... you think someone is real... they prove to be the exact opposite... but its sort of a closing statement saying ' no matter what I have you.. but in the meantime I'm going to make my life perfect'.. Its just funny that you end up losing someone in the process... and everything else you wanted to make perfect becomes something like that... but without that person it doesn't matter... its saying ' don't worry... we will make it through everything' " A Save Situation- " Its about waking that person up and telling them you can't wait."
