Ontario School Council Network
Lack of Shaded Areas and Green Space
Topics of Requested Assistance
" I am the parent of two boys who attend a public school in the TVDSB and the Co-Chairperson for the School Council. I would like to know how other schools have addressed the issue of the lack of shaded areas and green spaces on their playgrounds.

Several years ago the trees in the playground were removed as was all of the grass. Apparently the grass would not grow and I am unsure why the tree(s) was(were) removed. The entire playground is paved and there is a very small area, approximately 10 ft x 10 ft, that is shaded from harmful UV rays. We have approximately 300 students in attendance at the school. The playground receives southwestern exposure for most of the day and the sun is particularly hot and strong in the afternoon. Although we have a beautiful old school, we do not have air conditioning and the lack of shade on the southwestern side of the building causes the classrooms to heat up and become unbearable, making it difficult for the children to focus on their studies. As we are all aware, UV continues to be a growing health concern, particularly for children and the lack of shade makes for a very uncomfortable outdoor time, resulting in decreased physical activity, another growing health concern for children. I was hoping to hear from others who might have addressed this issue as we are actively pursuing solutions to this problem before we get into the warmer weather. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated."
