Ontario Fire Towers
On the left is the Larose Tower circa June 1971. It was manned to protect the large Larose Forest in the Kemptville District, SE of Ottawa. This was the largest man-made Forest in all of Canada I have been told. To the right is the McTavish Tower circa 1950 (the same year it was built) in the Port Arthur District near Thunder Bay.
The Sulman Tower circa 1959 near Kapuskasing is above and below is the 100 ft. Watson Tower also in the same district. You can see the plane's wingtip as well as the towerman on the ground waving upwards. The photos on this page are also courtesy of the Ontario Arhives (RG1-448.)
or Back to Main Page.
These are 2 wooden towers photos courtesy Dan Charboneau. These were located on the Quebec side of the Ottawa River despite the fact that they were part of the Ontario system. The Quebec side is a much higher elevation than the Ontario side in that area and so putting towers on the Quebec side made much more sense for spotting fires. The top photo was Bisset Creek tower, the 2nd was Deux Rivieres tower and the bottom was Stonecliffe tower.
