Abbott & Costello's Escapades
Abbott and Costello truly live up to their names. They are a couple of little clowns who keep our home full of laughter. The pekingese breed have personalities as big as a house, and these two are no exception. I hope you enjoy a few of the escapades and habits of these two little clowns........ Let's begin with Abbott, since we had him first. My husband met the lady who had a little black male peke in Alabama. On the way home, Vic had stopped to get a snack and cola. Vic said Abbott was a very good puppy, riding stretched out on the passenger seat. It was pretty hot outside, so Vic had lain the cola bottle in the seat with him to help him stay cool. (Of course, the a/c was on, too.) Vic said every time he tried to get the cola to get a drink, Abbott would growl and fuss at him, due to Abbott wrapping his little fuzzy body around it. Abbott began his life with us already in charge. As you have seen in the pics, Abbott likes to sleep on his back. He now sleeps in a rocking chair, you guessed it, belly up. When he was a puppy, we would find him in some of the strangest places, snoring like a freight train. At one time we let him sleep on the foot of our bed at night, but he snored so loud, I finally put him in the floor beside the bed on a pillow. I spent most of the night trying to keep him rolled over on his side to stop the snoring! That was not very restful, but I had a lot of midnight giggles. Speaking of the rocking chair, it squeaks. It also has an ottoman that rocks. Abbott likes to stand on the ottoman and ride it like a surfboard. One day, I'm afraid he'll rock too big and end up head first in the floor! But try to explain that to Abbott
Abbott has a bad habit of getting things he knows he is not supposed to have. When this happens, you must distract him with something else and steal it when he isn't looking. Usually we offer a weiner or doggie snack. While one person distracts Abbott, another grabs the item he's not supposed to have. It turns into quite an accomplishment! |
Costello's homecoming.......that was a day to remember. Abbott was very excited when we arrived home, once again from Alabama. (According to Luke, he had sunk into a depression while we were gone. He wouldn't play.) So when we arrived, Abbott was beside himself with excitement. At least until he realised we had another puppy. I thought he was having a seizure! He began foaming at the mouth, coughing and sputtering. He shook his head and covered the floor with foam. I gave Cosie to Vic and tried to calm Abbott down. I finally got him calm, so we decided to try the get to know you sniff again. Abbott was really intrested in Costello. He wasn't sure what to do with him, because he was so small, but he came around in a couple of days. And under no circumstances was Cosie allowed out of his site. When Cosie began to play with him, Abbott was very comical. He tried so hard to play and not hurt Cosie. Abbott soon became a very good little mommy.
Costello's first night was one I remember well. I was worried he would miss his mamma. He slept in the pet taxi, and was quite as a mouse. He had not made a peep since we brought him home. All he wanted to do was sit in my lap. I woke up around 12:30 a.m., thinking he might want to potty. I heard him rustling in the taxi, so I knew he was awake. I took him in our bathroom, where I had a training pad. He happily used the pad, ate some food, drank some water, and began to play.......and bark! He was barking like a little munchkin! I was stunned. I had not heard this puppy make any noises more than a little grunt, and here he was in the middle of the night barking like crazy! After a while of playing, he finally dropped off to sleep in my lap. I gently put him back in the pet taxi, so we wouldn't step on him.
Costello soon grew and was able to keep up with Abbott a little better. Now they run like crazy, barking and chasing each other through the house. When this happens, you really must sit down and put your feet up. It's safer that way. If you try to walk, you could get run over. When they finally stop for a minute to catch their breath, you may think it's safe, but you are wrong.........here they go again! Running around chairs, through the kitchen, back into the living room, the bedroom, and around again.
Abbott loves baths. Costello tolerates them. Both get nuts when the bath is over. Abbott will get very excited when you mention the b-word in front of him. Vic caused me to get into trouble with Abbott when he asked Abbott if he wanted a bath one day. Abbott began barking and jumping, running into the bathroom, and thump! He jumped in the tub. (There wasn't any water in the tub.) He would run into the livingroom to bark at me and go jump in the tub again. Thump! I was afraid he would hurt himself, so I thought it best to give him his bath. While the water was running, Abbott was on the step hanging over the side of the tub. I turned to get the towels, and splash! When I turned to look, Abbott was standing in the tub, water was running down the walls and all over the floor. I guess he couldn't wait any longer........
Cosie is big and bad......for 5 lbs. of foof. We have a chow named Chief. He likes to sit on the front porch steps. When Abbott and Costello are on the porch playing, Costello finds it very important to growl and bark at Chief through the gate. He sounds as if he would like to take a bite. He backs up growling, then pounces forward and barks. One day he was barking at Chief, and Cosie caught his reflection in the glass door. He started growling at himself! He had a really hard time trying to show Chief who was boss and the pup in the door, too.
