Grand Canyon

June 1997, somewhere in the Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon is an erosional feature and lies entirely within a geologic province called the Colorado Plateau [1]. Its precise age and origin remains controversial. Aristotele argued that the Earth has always been there [2], which implies that the Grand Canyon also has always been there. The creationists claim that the Grand Canyon is a result of Noah's Flood some 4,300 years ago [3, 4]. The late Stephen Jay Gould, however, disputed this claim and labelled the creationists as "yahoos" [5]. Dr. Daniel P. Schrag, Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Harvard University, reasoned that it doesn't really matter as long as you can come up with a good story [6]. Personally, I would need about 500,000 euros funding and my own graduate student before I can answer any questions concerning the age and origin of the Grand Canyon.
