Tying Instructions: 1. Tie in thread at eye. Wrap to bend, tie in a ball of thread or dubbing. 2. Tie in 5-6 hackle barbs on the near side of the hook, above the ball. Repeat on far side. Tighten thread, splaying fibers. 3. Wrap thread to 1/3 point on hook, tie in calftail, tips facing forward. Taper tag end. Pull post upright, and reinforce in front with thread wraps. Wrap thread up post 1/16 - 1/8". 4. Wrap thread to bend, dub forward to rear of post. 5. Tie in butt end of hackle in front of post, dull side down. Hackle fibers should start just past the post. 6. Wrap thread to eye, dub back to post. 7. Wrap hackle around post 4 - 5 times, secure to post. Wrap thread up post, through hackle, to secure. 8. Bring thread to eye and half hitch twice. Trim thread. Cement lightly at base of post. Notes: The buggy appearance from the guard hairs gives this fly the appearance of "life" while riding low in the film. I only began using it last year when I tied only one and had it massacred in one outing. This is the second time I've tied the pattern and I still have none. I will have to tie some up for myself. |
