Pattern Illustration
Foam Cricket
Tied by Tim Bennett

Hook: #10 - 14 TMC 5212
Thread: Black 3/0
Tail: Goose Biot
Underbody: Black poly and hare's ear mix
Body: Black foam
Wing: Orange and black deer hair Antennae: Moose mane
Legs: Black turkey quill, knotted (can also use biots)

Tying Instructions:

1. Start thread at eye of hook, tie in antennae. Wrap thread to bend.

2. Tie in single goose biot. Advance thread to midpoint of hook, tie in foam strip.

3. Wrap thread back to bend of hook, binding foam to hook shank. Dub thread heavily and wrap back to foam tie in point.

4. Pull foam forward, shellback style and tie down. Advance thread to eye of hook and back, binding foam to hook. A tag of foam should remain projecting over the eye of the hook.

5. Wrap a small dubbing ball at the midpoint, in order to flair the legs. Tie in the legs.

6. Tie in deer hair, black first, with a small clump of orange for visibility. Put a small loop around the orange deer hair before tie in, in order to keep the hairs together.

7. Wrap to hook eye, securing deer hair to hook. Dub thread and wrap back to mid-point.

8. Pull foam back towards deer hair and tie off at midpoint. Whip, and trim foam to desired length

Notes: I like to tie the legs up in bulk first. Use a pair of hackle pliers to hold the quill so it can be knotted

I love fishing crickets and I've tried a bunch of different patterns. There are some other cricket patterns that I like fishing, but I had trouble tying them. This is a combination of a few of them. When I'm tying for myself and not the swap, I actually like them bigger and bulkier. I use thicker foam and size 10 hooks. I also omit the antennae. They're just for show.
