Tying Instructions: 1. Select 3-5 fibers of moose mane. Tie this in so that length of the fiber extending from the back of the hook is approx. 3 times the length of the hook. 2. Tie in the wing. When making the post tie a wrap or two further up the wing than usual to allow a little extra room for working with the body materials. 3. Tie in the hackle. 4. Cut a bundle of deer hair about the size of a pencil. Cut this as close to the hide as possible. Even out the tips and pull out the loose fibers. Butt the tips of the fibers to the front of the wing post and tie the hair in, let it spin around the hook. Wrap the thread as close to the eye of the hook as possible. Now wrap the thread back to just in front of the wing. 5. With the butt ends of the deer hair facing forward clip them off even. This will make it easier to trim it to length later. Pull the deer hair back towards the rear of the hook forming a head that looks something like a torpedo. 6. Grasp the deer hair and tail material together and begin wrapping the thread backwards towards the tail. Once the desired length of body has been reached, wrap the thread tightly 7 or 8 times forming the end of the body then wrap the thread forward to just past the wing. Trim the deer hair even at the tail of the fly being careful not to cut the tail fibers. 7. Wrap the hackle around the wing post tying it off just in front of the post. Tie off the fly at this point again butting your loops near the wing post. This leaves a nice clean head on your fly. The nice thing with this is you never have to clean fly cement out of the eye of the hook! |
