Tying Instructions: 1. Start the thread about 1/3 of the way up from the bend and wrap back. Splay the tail by wrapping a ball of thread at the bend. Tie in a folded piece of rubber leg in front of the ball. 2. Cut a length of 2mm foam about 1/4 inch wide. Wrap your thread forward to about 1/8 inch behind the eye of the fly and tie in the foam, loose end going back. Move the thread back along the underside of the hook about 1/8 inch, pinch the foam in and make several tight wraps. Repeat to start of tail. 3. Work your thread forward to the foam tie-in point, fold the loose end of the foam forward and make several wraps over the whole thing. Trim the foam 1/4 inch past the eye. 4. Fold a piece of the rubber leg over the thread and slide it down against the side of the fly, make a couple of wraps, and repeat on the other side. 5. Fold the front piece of foam back and make another ball of thread up against it and behind the eye, then tie off the thread. 6. Whip finish. Notes: Panfish Candy is also called Panfish Crack because of the way sunnies just can't lay off of it. It's a very simple tie, a variation on a gurgler. Start with any 2X or 3X long hook in about a size 10, even streamer hooks will work, because of the foam flotation. I've tied these in lime green as it is the most productive over time, but it also works in tan, black, blue, red and yellow. The face will produce a gurgle or pop when retrieved, but most of the hits come when you let it fall and then sit for a short spell. I've never tried tying it smaller, but I get lots of hits that are just too small to take the fly, so you guys with the 1 weights may want to go real small. |
