[Bullet Head Foam Hopper]

Pattern Illustration
Bullet Head Foam Hopper
Tied by John Ozmun

Hook: Size 8 Streamer Hook No.79580
Thread: Yellow 6/0
Body: Yellow Foam cut to about the hook gap and twice hook length
Wing: Pheasant feather sprayed with Workable fixative.
Head: Olive dyed deer hair
Legs: Yellow round rubber

Tying Instructions:

1. Take the foam and fold it in half to find the center, pierce with a needle mounted in the vice

2. Start the thread on the needle at the midpoint and snug the foam up to it. Wrap the thread around the foam in an appropriate segment size. Four or five wraps around the foam then tuck the thread between the foam flaps and around the needle to advance the thread to get another segment width

3. Make two or three segments and hand whip finish at the last segment. Push body off the needle with thumb and index fingernails

4. Mount the body on the hook by sticking it between the two foam flaps and then into the first segment coming out the seam

5. Mount the hook into the vise, keep the body pushed to the bend and start the thread at the rear of the hook. Wrap the thread around the foam to create another segment then around the hook shank and advance the width of another segment.

6. Cut what is left of the foam flaps and cover the rest of the foam with thread. This locks the foam to the hook, now there should be a segment or two past the hook bend a segment pierced by the hook and two segments on the hook followed by a tapered section on to which the pheasant feather is mounted over the body for the wing.

7. Take a bunch of deer hair about the size of the body and tie it in tips forward. The butts can be used to cover the thread wraps on the foam. Wind the thread to just behind the eye and then back to where you want the neck to be, trim any long butts that are sticking up. With your fingers or a bullet head tool fold the hair back and capture the hair with the thread forming the head.

8. To finish the fly, attach the rubber legs on either side Madam X style and then whip finish. You can knot the legs at this point if you want.

Notes: I trim the deer hair under the hopper and put a drop of glue on the threads. If the head wants to spin I put a drop of super glue on the under side behind the collar. You can take a red magic marker and give the hopper a red butt and a black marker to stripe the legs.
