Up Oscar Predictions Contenders Precursor Awards Oscar Night

So another year is over. And another predictable ceremony ended this year's Oscar Race. After last year's very predictable race I was really expecting to get some great surprises and exciting moments but the frontrunners in every single category won (and sadly many of them undeservingly so).

Chris Rock really surprised and his opening monologue was one of the night's highlights but after that he barely appeared in the show and the night dragged and dragged.

Gil Cates' at the show added some dynamic at first but then they just became so irrelevant, pointless and even ridiculous. Giving the awards on the audience and onstage was completely ridiculous but moving on...

WINNERS

The night started out great with Morgan Freeman, Cate Blanchett, Sandy Powell, Thelma Schoonmaker and Charlie Kaufman winning. But sadly it didn't end that way. Despite being a very powerful performance, I still can't believe that Hilary Swank is now 2 time Oscar Winner, passing Meryl Streep, Susan Sarandon and joining Jodie Foster, Vivien Leigh and Olivie DeHavilland. On the other hand the 3 time nominee Annette Bening and the 4 time nominee Kate Winslet remained oscarless.

But the real lowdown of the night was Martin Scorsese loosing. What a shame that probably the most influential and best American director working today (and one of the all time best) had to be humilianted once again by loosing his fifth Oscar nod. The Aviator was the perfect movie to finnally deliver an Oscar to Marty since it was a very well-crafted movie with a fabulous directing job from him. Sadly it didn't happen. At least we know that he remains in the company of names like Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick or Orson Welles. On the other hand, Clint Eastwood won his second directing Oscar and another one as a producer for his "Baby". It really was his night.

BEST MOMENTS

1. Chris Rock's opening monologue
2. Cate Blanchett winning
3. Robin William's presentation
4. Edna Mode
5. Charlie Kaufman finnally on-stage to accept the Oscar that he so deserved

W0RST MOMENTS

1. Scorsese loosing once again
2. What was wrong with Sean Penn? Does he have any sense of humour at all?
3. Gil Cates' changes at the show

WORST SPEECH

1. Hilary Swank - One of the most horrible speeches in a long time. It was just so staged and rehearsed and it seemed like a copy from her 2000 win. And what the hell did she have to say that she "is just a girl from a trailer park who had a dream"? Just go away, please.

BEST SPEECH

1. Thelma Schoonmaker - Gracious, moving and touching.
2. Cate Blanchett - "I hope my son will marry your daughter"
3. Morgan Freeman - Classy
