The Pick Of The Day's Action

O Arsenal v AS Roma
   (Kick-Off 19:45, Live Coverage On ITV1 From 19:30)

Arsenal can reach the quarter-finals tonight if they win and Ajax beat Valencia in Amsterdam.  Sol Campbell is a major doubt for the gunners after finishing Saturday's FA Cup tie against Chelsea with a swollen Achilles tendon.  Should he fail to make the starting eleven, Pascal Cygan will be given the opportunity to repeat the heroic display he gave at the Stadio Olimpico.

AS Roma coach Fabio Capello is desparate for a win to save the clubs European campaign - and possibly his job come the end of the season - having suffered a poor domestic campaign.  The Rome club pulled off an impressive 3-0 win in Valencia a fortnight ago against one of the tightst defences in Europe - Arsenal beware.

That result was largely due to the return of star Italian international forward Francesco Totti and key Brazilian captain Emerson, a man who is to Totti what Vieira is to Henry.  Both will play tonight.  The visitors will be missing defender Jonathan Zebina, however, who is suffering a thigh injury.  He is set to be replaced by Brazilian ace Aldair.  Greece's Traianos Dellos is also injured and midfielder Olivier Dacourt - on loan from Leeds United - is cup tied, having already played in the UEFA Cupfor the Yorkshire club this season.

Prediction - Arsenal fail to shake off their poor home form:  Arsenal 1 - 1 AS Roma

O
Inter Milan v Newcastle United
   (Kick-Off 19:45, Live Coverage On ITV2 From 19:30)

Newcastle look set for a hostile reception at the San Siro tonight, with Italian international defender Fabio Cannavaro announcing his intent to play tough.  It was the centre back's persistent pushing and shirt tugging at St James' Park that provoked Craig Bellamy to raise a knee to the Italin's chest and Alan Shearer to lash out with his elbow.  Welsh striker Bellamy received a red card for that incident and though the referee missed the Shearer incident, the former England captain also received a ban after a review by the video panel.

The toon legend will be brimming with confidence tonight, however, having netted a hat-trick against Leverkusen a fortnight ago.  Incredibly the prolific front man had never before scored from open play in the Champions League.

Barcelona have already qualified for the next round and the geordies MUST avoid defeat if they are to have any chance of joining them, as an Inter win would see them take the other qualification spot.

The home side will be without seven key men, including Hernan Crespo (injured), Gabriel Batistuta (cup tied), Alvaro Recoba and Domenico Morfeo (both suspended).  Turkish midfielder Emre has dismissed Newcastle's chances by stating his side can win even if they do play well below their best.

Prediction - San Siro a step too far for the brave magpies.  Defensive frailties exposed by Conceicao and Vieri:   Inter Milan 2 - 0 Newcastle United   (Hope I'm Very Wrong)

The Top Stories In Brief

Leeds United look set to sell yet another of their star players.  Harry Kewell has refused to sign a new contract with the club, who will now consider selling him in the summer rather than risk losing him on a free transfer as they did Lee Bowyer.  Inter Milan would be interested.

Verdict:  The Australian has made no secret of his desire to play in Italy.  Gone in the summer.

West Ham are alleged to have made an audatious attempt to lure former Arsenal skipper Tony Adams out of retirement.  Manager Glenn Roeder has become so frustrated with the Premiership's worst defence that he is prepared to take on a player severely lacking match fitness.

Verdict:  Adams rejects as he studies for a sports science degree and spends time with his family.

Tottenham's search for a strike partner for Robbie Keane has taken a new turn, with AS Monaco's powerful Burundi international Shabani Nonda high on their list.  The White Hart Lane outfit failed to land any of their targets in the January transfer window with Michael Ricketts and Malcolm Christie moving to Middlesbrough and Real Madrid's Spanish international Fernando Morientes opting to remain at the Bernabeu.  Nonda joined Monaco after a highjly impressive spell at RC Lens and would cost spurs around 6m.

Verdict:  Promising performances in France but would look average in the Premiership.

England manager Sven Goran Eriksson has suggested that FA Cup replays should be scrapped.  This comes after the 2-2 draw between Arsenal and Chelsea at Highbury on Saturday, which will be replayed on March 25th - just four days before England are due to play Leichtenstein in a Euro 2004 qualifier.

Sunderland havee been tipped to appoint former Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy as successor to Howard Wilkinson.  He was strongly linked with the post after the departure of Peter Reid in November.  On that occasion, former Leeds boss Wilkinson managed to sweet talk his way into the hot seat, but after a disastrous spell in which Sunderland have tumbled to the foot of the table, chairman Bob Murray and the board have opted for a fresh managerial approach.
