City Profile: Sakuragicho
by Tamra Cocks

Sakuragicho is famous for the Landmark Tower.  It is one of the best skyscrapers to be seen in Yokohama. It houses an array of stores (most of them considerably overpriced, yet pretty for looks!) You'll find some yummy restaurants as well.  Most importantly, you will come across one of Japan's popular English book stores - Yurindo. Yurindo is located on the 5th floor.  You can find anything to read - including newspapers, novels, cookbooks, magazines, and Japanese study books.  The Landmark Tower is also renowned for its great views.  You can go up to the 69th floor for views of Yokohama for around 1000 yen.

If it's views of Yokohama you're after, then I'd recommend a ride on the
Cosmo Clock. This is Sakuragicho's huge ferris wheel, which you can ride during the day or at night.  Apart from the queasy feeling you get from being so high up, it does give you a sweeping view of the city. Directly next to Cosmo Clock is an amusement park which overlooks the harbour. The park is good for kids, but if you're after a thrill, save your money for Disneyland.

There is another shopping complex next to Landmark Tower called "
Queen's Square."  It has lots of specialty shops, halls, restaurants, and offices.  It's not that much different from Landmark Tower, but is worth a look.

Not far from the amusement park is a building called
World Porters.  This is a huge store where you can buy your foreign goodies.  It's easy to spot as you'll see WORLD PORTERS written on the side of the building.

Personally, I think Sakuragicho is best at night time.  There are some beautiful sights over the harbour.  The Cosmo Clock and the
Nippon Maru ship which sits in the harbour are all lit up.  It's definitely an ideal place to take people who are visiting you from abroad.  So next time you're contemplating another movie weekend inside with the cockroaches, check out Sakuragicho instead!
