PEPTIC ULCER

Peptic ulcer refers to ulceration) in the lining of upper portion of digestive tract such as esophagus, stomach, duodenum etc. Depending upon where their location they are named  as gastric ulcers or duodenal ulcers.

Overproduction of acid or disruption of natural barriers, burns and corrodes the inner delicate lining of digestive tract.

Factors responsible are
emotional stress, certain food, infection with microorganism (H. Pylori), overuse of certain conventional anti-inflammatory medicines, smoking, all contribute towards overstimulation of acid.
Usually patients with peptic ulcer disease have family history of ulcer indicating that some inborn or inherent tendencies make one prone for the condition.

The presence of ulcers is confirmed when the patient is sent for investigations like barium meal X-rays or gastroscopy.

Prlonged or neglected, ulcers could perforate the stomach wall causing a danger to one's life or cause cancer in the long run. Hence, treatment needs to be started immediately once the presence of an ulcer is known. Timely treatment can prevent surgery which might involve cutting off of a portion of the stomach.
