Overview of Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Irritable bowel syndrome involves the intestines. It is varcharacterized by irritation and inflammation and is a benign condition. It is not contagious, nor is it inherited. Women are twice as likely to have this disorder than men.


Causes of Irritable Bowel Syndrome
The cause of irritable bowel syndrome is unknown. It seems to be closely tied to stress, emotional conflict, anxiety , depression, and obsessive worry. Marital tension, fear of loss of a beloved person or object, death of a loved one are all conditions that have been associated with its onset. Certain cases seem to be triggered by eating, although no specific food has been identified as responsible.


Signs and Symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome
The onset of irritable bowel syndrome is usually in early adult life. The episodes which produce this disorder may last for days, weeks or months. There is usually cramping pain in the middle abdomen or to the right or left lower abdomen. The pain is frequently relieved with bowel movements. Nausea, bloating, and excessive gas occurs. Diarrhea is seen to alternate with constipation and there may be rectal pain. There is frequently loss of appetite and loss of weight. Headache, backache, depression, anxiety and difficulty concentrating are other less specific symptoms.
