Fibroid Tumors Of The Uterus
Fibroid tumors occur In the muscular wall, or myometrium, of the uterus. There is an abnormal growth of cells. The cells are not fibrous, they are composed of abnormal muscle cells and, therefore, the name is misleading. These tumor are usually benign and quite common. There are 3 major types of fibroids. The types are determined by where they appear on the uterus. Subserous fibroids are on the outside of the uterus, intramural fibroids are on the wall of the uterus, and submucous fibroids are inside the uterus. Fibroids rarely involve the cervix.
Causes of Fibroid Tumors Of The Uterus
They are rare in prepubertal girls or menopausal women, because estrogen is required for the growth of fibroid tumors.
Signs and Symptoms of Fibroid Tumors Of The Uterus
Frequently, fibroids do not produce any symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they include frequent menstruation with heavy bleeding and large clots. There is often abnormally painful menstrual periods. There may be bleeding in between menstrual periods. Fibroids may produce sensations of pressure on the urinary bladder or rectum. Due to heavy bleeding, anemia may develop with generalized weakness, pallor, rapid hear rate and fatigue. Painful sexual intercourse and bleeding after sexual intercourse are common. Occasionally, an abnormal vaginal discharge may occur.
