| BACK PAIN Overview of Back Pain, Low Back pain is usually caused by muscle strain and is often accompanied by sciatica (pain that radiates from the back to the buttock and down into the leg). The onset of pain may be immediate or occur later after an injury. The patient gets into a cycle, of pain-spasm-pain: starting with a muscle spasm, the spasm then causes pain, and the pain results in additional muscle spasm. Causes of Back Pain, Low The many causes are: exertion or lifting, severe blow or fall, back disorders, infections, ruptured lumbar disk, nerve dysfunction, osteoporosis, tumors, spondylosis (hardening and stiffening of the spinal column), congenital problem, and childbirth. Often there is no obvious cause. Signs and Symptoms of Back Pain, Low The most apparent symptom is pain.
