Captain Delighted By Performance

Speaking at a post match press conference, a grinning "Brownshirts" captain Stephen Fleming could barely hide his delight at his teams emphatic, and albeit unexpected, victory over a very much in form Windies side during round three of the Nations Cup at the 'Gabba in Brisbane.

Despite losing their Captain on the first ball of the innings, the Kiwi batsman recovered well with a superb 302. A large share of those runs came from the bat of hard hitting middle-order batsman Shane Bond who showed no signs of the shoulder injury which kept him out of the match against Australia by belting 113 off 94 balls. This innings included nine fours and six sixes, much to the delight of the crowd who relished the opportunity to engage in a bit of fielding practice of their own. Glen Sulzberger also repaid the confidence his selectors placed in him by providing a valuable 31.

The Windies were restricted to 226/6 by a good bowling performance with Daryl Tuffey picking up 3/34 and tournament highlight Jacob Oram chipping in with an important 2/29. Though New Zealand will be concerned that they were unable to do more in that department.

Captain Fleming, though delighted with his sides performance today, has refused to get carried away saying "We worked very hard in training these last few days...and it paid off out there today, but we've still got lots to do. We've got a long trip to Perth to play Pakistan in what should be hot conditions which will suit them, then India who are very capable on their day of stinging anybody. You would be mad to suggest any of those games are a walk over..."

However humbly Fleming may be playing the media though, this win clearly reasserts New Zealand's claim to the Nations Cup trophy.
