Zimbabwe Appoint New Coach

The Zimbabwe Cricket Union have announced the appointment of Stuart Cameron to the position of coach of the Zimbabwe team. The 38 year old Australian replaces ex-West Indian star Phil Simmons.

When asked about the challenges ahead Cameron sounded upbeat, stating that for such a young squad (the oldest player being 25) there is a strong nucleus of four or five potential world class players.

Wicketkeeper/Captain Tatenda Taibu echoed the new coach's comments..."Whilst we are grateful for the effort that Phil (Simmons) put in, the team feel that this appointment is in the best interests of taking the team forward. Yes, we are still learning. But greater exposure will help bring on our players and hopefully see our Test status reinstated."

Cricket has grown in popularity in Zimbabwe and is now the second most popular sport in this soccer-crazy country. It's reputation was tarnished when following the sacking of 13 leading players (all white) the Test status for the team was suspended.
