This is a very comprehensive booklet that outlines the basic issues of online learning.  It covers the advantages and limitations and explains how to get started.

Clark, Richard E.,1994, Media Will Never influence Learning, Educational Technology Research and Development, vol. 42, issue 2, pp. 21-29.  

A very well-known article that concludes that the type of media used for learning will not influence the amount of learning.  The important factor that determines learning is the design of the instruction.

Descy, Don E., 1991, Instructional Media Utilization in the classroom and its relationship to teacher burnout and student learning, International Journal of Instructional Media, Vol 18, issue 2, pp. 99-107.

This author refutes some of Clark's findings by suggesting that the use of a variety of media can improve student motivation and can lessen teacher burnout.

Yates, Eleanor Lee, 2000, From the Trenches: Faculty Have Differing Views of Online Education, Community College Week, Vol 12, issue 21,pp. 9-10.

 

Online learning provides much more flexibility in terms of timing and location of studying which allows some students to enroll who would otherwise be unable to.  The article also suggests other benefits and disadvantages of online learning.
