Instructional Strategies

1. Induction ( Pre-activities ) 20 min

1.1 Demonstrate to pupils how to start the program and how to work through the five spelling activities. ( Projection Screen )

Choosing ‘See Word’, ‘Finish Word’ or ‘Flash Word’ will present pupils with three options to learn the spelling of the words.
Choosing ‘Edit’ in the Midnight Correction activity allows pupils to work at different levels of difficulty depending on the pupil's’ ability.
Choosing ‘ Scrambled Words, Fill-in-the-blank Sentences, or Mixed’ in the Frog Crossing activity offers pupils a choice of clues to the crossword puzzle.
Choose ‘ Beginning, Intermediate or Advanced’ level of difficulty allows pupils to work at the pace they are comfortable with in the Leap to Complete activity and the Bullfrog Log game.

1.2 Class discussion based on activity 1.1

What must you do before you can start on the Spell It Deluxe program? ( Enter name )

What happens when you choose ‘Flash Word’ in the Bayou Word Preview ? (the word flashes briefly on the screen for you to recognise )

What happens when you choose ‘Mixed’ in the Frog Crossing activity? ( this is a combination of scrambled words and sentences )

What do you do if you want the letters to appear slowly in the ‘Leap to Complete’ activity? ( select the ‘Easy’ option )

2. Development Activities ( 25 min )

2.1 Individual work ~ Each pupil works independently.

3. Conclusion Activities ( 15 min )

3.1 Consolidate lesson by asking pupils what they noticed about the words - compound words are made up of two shorter words joined together.

3.2 Asked pupils to add more such words to the list. ( Pupils to work in pairs / or in groups of four. )

3.3 Encourage pupils to add to the list other compound words that they come across. ( on-going activity after class )
